The people who want to purchase a PlayStation 5 but don't like the design won't have to deal with the white & black model forever, as Sony has promised that PS5 special editions are coming in the future. After months of speculation, Sony finally revealed the design of the PS5 during a reveal event held earlier this month and the reactions were mixed, to say the least.

The PlayStation 5 reveal made "Wi-Fi Router" trend on Twitter, as many people pointed out the similarities between the two pieces of hardware. The design of the PS5 is slick, but the fact that it resembles so many other pieces of technology led to the denizens of the Internet running to Photoshop and making their own interpretations of the system. This led to a number of PlayStation 5 console design memes, with people comparing the system to a duck's beak, the tower of Barad-dûr from The Lord of the Rings, and Seto Kaiba's jacket from Yu-Gi-Oh!.

The white & black PlayStation 5 model won't be the only option available for the system throughout its run. VP of UX design at PlayStation Matt MacLaurin recently fielded questions on LinkedIn regarding the PS5. According to PlayStation FanaticMacLaurin confirmed that special editions are coming and that they will be customizable.

The PlayStation 4 received a number of different special editions throughout its lifespan, including the bright red Spider-Man PS4 Pro and the Diamond Dogs model based on Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. These systems were a huge step-up in design when compared to the base models of the PS4/Pro and some of them still fetch outrageous prices on second-hand sites. The special editions for the PS5 likely won't be released until after the initial launch, so it's unlikely that there will be a Spider-Man: Miles Morales version of the system.

It's not surprising to learn that there will be special editions of the PS5 at launch. What is surprising is that Sony is confirming it so early. There are few reasons to buy a PS5 at launch as it is, and the prospect of future systems with better color schemes and customizable designs might convince people to hold off on purchasing a system until more options are available to them. The PlayStation 5 is going to be a big console, so it's going to be very noticeable when sitting beneath a television set and its aesthetic will be important to those who are planning to own it throughout its lifespan.
