The minds behind the upcoming PlayStation 5 are looking at new ways to enhance a player’s in-game experience, and a new patent may have just revealed a feature that will allow the console to generate musical soundtracks based around a given playstyle or emotion using AI. Details regarding Sony’s next-gen console have been coming to light at an increasing pace over the past couple of months, with rumors hinting at a November 2020 release date for the system.

The drip of new intel started with the “Road To PS5” live stream presentation by lead architect Mark Cerny back in March, which detailed the new console’s promising SSD hard drive that will even allow it to play games from older PlayStation systems like the current PS4. Then came the unveiling of the significantly different DualSense controller, which set fans abuzz during the month of April. While the console itself still hasn’t been revealed yet, focus now seems to have shifted toward the system’s software, with rumors that its lineup of games is set to be announced soon and hints of a new program that could allow a much more personal gaming experience via the music heard during a given play session.

Sony has filed a new patent for a feature that has been dubbed “Dynamic Music Creation in Gaming.” This technology consists of an AI system that monitors a game’s onscreen characters, emotions being conveyed in a certain scene, or even the player’s in-game location, playstyle, and performance in order to generate said game’s soundtrack on the fly. According to the patent itself, this is done via mapping one or more musical motifs to a programming vector, which is in turn assigned to a certain emotion. When the game detects that emotion being conveyed in the game, the type and tone of music assigned to the vector are generated. It's not clear if this feature will be present in the PS5 at launch or a later time, or if it's destined for an even more cutting-edge piece of hardware, but it's possible.

PlayStation 5 PS5 Release Date When Coming Out

So far, Sony has been promising a number of intriguing new features and technologies for the PS5, with the console demonstrating its impressive graphical capabilities during a recent tech demo of Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5. Later on, John Wick Hex developer Mike Bithell spoke of the aforementioned DualSense’s haptic feedback technology on a recent podcast, claiming that it can simulate such sensations as the feel of raindrops pouring from the sky. Even still, certain former Sony employees are hinting that the PS5 still holds a number of secrets that are still yet to be revealed.

These secrets could include the new “Dynamic Music Creation,” which fits in with Sony’s past promises to enhance the overall gaming experience on the PS5. Imagine a player having difficulty with a level, and the soundtrack growing more tense and desperate as their health grows lower and the enemies begin to outnumber them. Then, as said player begins gaining the upper hand and getting a much-needed second wind, the music becomes more hopeful and triumphant, reflecting the emotions the player feels as they snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Such a cinematic scenario could very well be possible on the PlayStation 5, which is set to usher in the newest console generation when it hits stores sometime this holiday season.
