The era of the current console generation will continue through its successor, as Sony has revealed that the PS5 will be able to use its Game Boost feature to improve the frame rate of some PS4 and PS VR games. Sony has confirmed that the PS5 will be backward compatible with PS4 games at launch, but not with earlier PlayStation generations.

The PS5 is due to be released in November, but Sony will still be supporting the PS4 for the time being, which makes sense, considering it's the fourth best-selling console of all time. The PS4 will be supported for four years following the launch of the PS5, which means that it will likely still receive entries in the popular sports franchises, as well as with other annual series, like Just Dance. Over time, Sony will move the exclusives over to the Ps5, as that's where the future of the console line lies.

Sony is heavily promoting the backward compatibility aspect of the PS5, and there is a good reason to keep hold of PS4 discs for the foreseeable future. The official PlayStation website has confirmed that the PS5 will have a feature called Game Boost, which will improve the frame rate of some PS4 and PS VR games, making them faster and smoother.

PS5 Game Boost Options

Sony hasn't revealed which games will receive this treatment, but it's likely to include the company's first-party outings. It wouldn't be surprising to learn that all of the PS4 games in the PlayStation Plus Collection will receive this updated treatment on day one, in order to give the PS5 a selection of boosted titles on launch day.

The recent PS5 Showcase demonstrated a shift in tactic from Sony, which was likely inspired by the positive response to Microsoft's cross-gen promotion for the Xbox line of systems. Sony previously wanted to separate the PS4 and PS5 generations as much as possible, but that has now changed. The backward compatibility of the PS5 is now being heavily promoted, several PS5 exclusives have become cross-gen, and the PlayStation Plus Collection is ensuring that fans will have lots of older games to play on day one. The fact that the PS5 will improve the quality of some PS4 and PS VR games is a good sign that the older system isn't going to be abandoned just yet.
