After months of waiting, Sony has finally revealed the PS5 Standard and Digital Editions' price and release date info during the PS5 Showcase, and the next-gen consoles are not only competitively priced with the Xbox Series X and S, but pre-orders go live tomorrow. Amid a digital presentation stuffed with next-gen game reveals and concentrated hype, these long-awaited pieces of launch info capped off the day's announcements with a veritable mic drop.

Outmatching even this year's initial PS5 reveal event in terms of sheer volume of game announcements, today's PS5 Showcase revealed Final Fantasy XVI and an all-new, long-rumored Harry Potter game titled Hogwarts: Legacy. Also shown off was Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Demon's Souls gameplay, along with a myriad of launch titles and details like the all-new PlayStation Plus Collection to tide early adopters over until big-hitters start to land in 2021. Of course, price has been a growing sticking point for Sony's potential customers as the console's Holiday 2020 release has grown inexorably closer, and recent PS5 leaks and rumors thankfully weren't far off the mark.

The real showstopper (and, if everyone's honest, the main reason most viewers tuned in) was revealed at the PS5 Showcase's very close, with the announcement that the PS5 Standard Edition will run players $499.99 USD/$629.99 CAD, while the Digital Edition will be a lower price of $399.99 USD/$499.99 CAD on November 12, 2020 in select countries and November 19 everywhere else. Both prices are quite competitive with the Xbox Series X, which also runs $499, but the Xbox Series S and the Nintendo Switch are still the budget choices of the generation for the larger, less hardcore crowd. However, PlayStation tweeted after the event to let players know one area where it firmly beat Microsoft to the punch: PS5 pre-orders "will be available starting as early as tomorrow at select retailers."

While the PlayStation community undoubtedly breathed a collective sigh of relief (followed by a nervous shuffle of legal tender in their wallets) at this information's reveal, the lattermost reveal was bizarrely left out of the actual PS5 Showcase event. Such was the case for several large developments that would have been more than welcome during the actual reveal presentation, including Spider-Man: Miles MoralesHorizon Forbidden West, and Sackboy: A Big Adventure all having simultaneous PS4 launches alongside their better-known PS5 ones, all of which and more had announcements today - just not where many people would actually see it.

That aside, the next console war is at last kicking into full gear with the PS5's price points, global release dates, and (to a lesser extent) pre-order info finally known, and Sony isn't taking its pole position lightly heading into the ninth console generation. There are still doubtlessly more PS5 reveals to come, but today's blow-out showcase has better equipped on-the-fence customers as to what their choice will be come the second week of November.
