A new test suggests that the latest model of the PlayStation 5 actually runs cooler than older versions of the console, which is in contrast to previous claims that suggested the opposite. This information came to light just before Sony held its PlayStation Showcase event, which featured several new titles soon to arrive on the console, including the likes of God of War Ragnarök and Spider-Man 2, as well as a newly announced video game starring Wolverine.
The newest version of the PlayStation 5 fulfilled a player request to make Sony's latest console line lighter when compared to the base models from launch, but it also generated some controversy when it came to its cooling system. YouTuber Austin Evans examined the new PS5 and seemed to discover that the reduced weight was the result of a smaller cooling system that was not as effective as its base model counterpart. A new test, however, has produced results contrary to the claims made last month by finding the latest model runs significantly cooler than the launch version of the console.
YouTube channel Hardware Busters International ran some side-by-side tests between an old and new PS5 and came to the conclusion that the latter runs better. The video demonstrating the comparison goes into in-depth detail when comparing the models, noting all differences both inside and out prior to testing as well as model numbers, fan manufacturers, and testing conditions. A caveat is made at the end of the video stating that the cooling was better in the new model for this specific side-by-side comparison, but more conclusive results can only be possible by completing similar tests on more units.
It was discovered prior to release that the Playstation's cooling issues seem linked to console size, and that has been something of a tricky fix for Sony over the past few generations. Fans simultaneously want a more manageable unit that stays cool for long periods of time without making too much noise. The PS5 has received praised for mastering the latter of these requests, since the reverse was true for the PlayStation 4. With regards to the other desires fans possess, though, it seems like the newest version of Sony's current-gen console is trying to find the proper balance.
Even before its launch in 2020, Sony knew the cooling system would be somewhat controversial, and made plans to adjust it going forward based off of player feedback. The gaming giant likely the same thing the players want in this instance because it knows a compact, cool, and quiet system will most likely generate a larger profit. More iterations of the PlayStation 5 are coming according to a recent rumor, and it will be interesting to see what changes are made in pursuit of that perfect balance.
