The DualSense controller for PlayStation 5 is one of the most innovated pieces of gaming technology currently available. The controller immerses players in the game by including a haptic feedback system that lets them feel the textures of environments or the recoil of weapons and an adaptive trigger system that emulates the pressure and counter-pressure of using weapons or hitting brakes on a car. In addition to all the immersive features, players can also use the controller as a microphone to speak with friends when playing co-ops and multiplayer games. By default, this microphone is unmuted, but some players may prefer their own headset or need to turn off the microphone for a little added privacy.

There are two ways for players to mute the microphone, the easiest being a button on the controller itself. Players can also change the default setting to make sure the microphone is muted on startup so they can choose whether to turn it on, rather than needing to remember to turn it off. Here's how to mute the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller, either temporarily or by default, to prevent accidental broadcasts.

How to Mute The DualSense Controller Mic on PlayStation 5

PS5 Controller DualSense Triggers

Players can always mute their PlayStation 5 DualSense controller microphone by clicking the Mute button on the controller itself. This is the button just under the PlayStation button. This solution is only temporary, however, and the controller mic will automatically unmute upon shutting down the console and restarting it the next time. Players should use this option to mute during a gaming session if they don't want their party to hear them but want to turn it right back on later.

This can also be done using the PlayStation button. When the control center opens, players can hover over the microphone icon and press X. In the resulting prompt, they should select Mute to mute the mic.

It is also possible to mute all sound input and output using either of these two options. If players need to take a break and want to mute the entire PlayStation 5 system, they can press and hold the Mute button on the controller until they no longer hear any sounds. The orange button will blink, indicating the whole system is muted. Players can also access this option by pressing the PlayStation button.

Sound Settings options on PlayStation 5

To make sure the microphone remains muted on startup, players can instead enter the Settings menu using the gear symbol in the top right of the home screen. Then, they will need to scroll down the menu and select Sound. In the Sound menu, they should choose Microphone.

Next, players will need to make sure that the Input Device is set to Microphone on Controller. Then, they need to navigate to the Microphone Status When Logged In option and choose Mute. Players can always change this later.
