Gameplay footage for Godfall, a PlayStation 5 game, has leaked, giving fans a potential sample of what to expect from the graphics in the next generation of games. Fans have seen Godfall in motion before, but this is the first time they've seen what can be called gameplay.

An announcement trailer for Godfall arrived in December of 2019. The trailer dropped during laster year's Game Awards, and it showcased the game's setting and what appeared to be cutscenes or moments when the player didn't have direct control of the character. This title is being developed by Counterplay Games and published by Gearbox, makers of Borderlands. It's being billed as a "looter-slasher," drawing obvious comparisons to the looter-shooter that is Borderlands.

The gameplay leak for Godfall was dropped on Reddit by a user whose account has since been deleted. Based on the title of the post, the user apparently has a full trailer and clipped only a fraction of it for sharing on Reddit. That fraction shows off some of the combat and graphics in Godfall, so it's drawn a lot of discussion and sharing. The lighting, particle effects and smooth framerate make it look next-gen, of course, but not too much in these brief scenes points towards it being any more next-gen than a strong PC game.

Godfall is the first new IP on the PlayStation 5 that's been announced so far. In fact, it's the first PS5 game the general population actually knows about. Given its multiplayer, action looter genre, Godfall could be a title that lasts years into the PS5's lifespan. Of course, that totally depends on Counterplay Games' ability to craft a strong world and exceptional end game content to keep players coming back for more. Should they succeed like Bungie did with DestinyGodfall could live for a long, long time.

While it's exciting that gameplay footage for a PS5 game has leaked, it's reasonable to temper any excitement based on the game and developer. Typically, the most technically impressive launch efforts come from first-party studios, not third. Counterplay Games is not one of Sony's staple studios, so it's likely that they won't get as much out of the system as, say, Naughty Dog (currently at work on the delayed The Last of us 2) or Guerilla Games.
