The PlayStation 5 is now the fastest-selling console in PlayStation history. Sony's newest gaming system finally launched last November after a year of steady hype, showing off several exciting features including haptic feedback and SSD storage, as well as strong first-party exclusives like Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Ratchet And Clank: Rift Apart.

Sales figures for the PS5 took off running right out of the gate, with the new PlayStation console selling over 4.5 million units even before the end of 2020. This streak continued well into the new year, surpassing the Xbox Series X as the months went on and even being crowned the fastest-selling console in US history by April. Indeed, while the Nintendo Switch managed to outsell the PS5 in February and March, it's becoming increasingly clear that Sony is off to a great start in the latest iteration of the so-called "Console Wars" - and is even making history among its own company in the process.

Recently, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that the PlayStation 5 has sold over 10 million units globally over nine months, making it the fastest-selling PlayStation console in history. Sony thanked its customers for their support in helping the PS5 reach this milestone, as well as mentioning the hard work the Product Development team put into making the system and expressing excitement in future games like Horizon Forbidden West and Santa Monica Studios’ God Of War sequel.

New PS5 Digital Edition Model Will Be Lighter

It hasn’t always been smooth sailing to get to this point, as the PlayStation 5 was faced with a severe console shortage at launch due to several different factors, including an ongoing shortage of vital processor chips in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Not only that, but online scalpers aggressively targeted both the PS5 and the Xbox Series X at launch, employing bots to snatch up units and resell them on eBay at ridiculously higher prices. Sony has pressed on in the face of these challenges though, ramping up production of the PS5 throughout the summer to meet up with the system’s high demand.

Sony is likely very thrilled at the landmark success of the PlayStation 5, and there’s little wonder why. The PS5 has had a great showing among gamers not even a year since its launch, bolstered by cutting-edge gameplay features and a strong slate of exclusive titles - with many more planned for the future. The PlayStation 5 is still very early in its lifespan, so it will likely break even more records in the months and even years to come - and Sony likely wouldn’t have it any other way.
