Taking inspiration from the futuristic design of the new PlayStation 5 DualSense controller, a 3D artist has given the device a startling new feature in an animated 3D render. It is a proper sci-fi makeover, which lines up perfectly with the visual style of the controller.

The DualSense controller is the most courageous design shift in the history of PlayStation devices. It does inherit some resemblance from previous generations, but the overall concept looks very unique for Sony - and not so innovative from Xbox’s perspective. There are obvious similarities between the controllers of the two rival console manufacturers with some Sony fans expressing their concerns that DualSense looks like the Xbox controller too much. Some other PlayStation enthusiasts have welcomed the new design with a plethora of PS5 fan art and collages. There’s a very popular one imagining DualSense as a walking robot, which lends itself nicely to the newest piece of art a 3D artist has created.

Another bold sci-fi concept comes from 3D artist and motion designer Eduard Mykhailov who shared his vision with the Sony community via a short video on Instagram. Upon the DualSense’s reveal, its touchpad looked suspiciously like a hatch, and it functions exactly like that in the animated render revealing a gun turret hidden inside the controller. Interestingly, the weaponry is pointed towards the player, which might suggest that losing a game while using the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller might be fatal. Alternatively, the gun turret could serve as a protective feature so that no one would use the controller other than the owner.

While the real DualSense controller won’t host any violent weaponry like the one imagined by this 3D artist, the device will nonetheless offer a few hardware innovations. Adaptive triggers are a promising PS5 feature as they will offer an additional level of responsiveness to experiencing video games. According to Sony, developers will be able to vary the level of triggers’ resistance in particular situations, greatly adding to the interactivity of gameplay. Another ambitious feature of DualSense is the haptic feedback, which will basically allow players to feel in-game surfaces through physical vibration.

Judging by the amount of attention the PS5 DualSense controller has been receiving lately, Sony made the right decision to go for a revolutionary design rather than to stick to the existing style once again. Moreover, the community’s response - apart from some inevitable criticism - has been positive, with fans all over the world promoting the new design with their own memes and artistic renderings. When PS5 eventually releases later this year, there will already be a global audience of players eager to get their hands on the DualSense controller thanks to fan advertisements like the one featured above.
