An anonymous Reddit user has gotten hands on with the Playstation 5's DualSense controller, and is suggesting the battery life could be a lot longer than the Playstation 4's DualShock 4. As the holiday release windows for both the Playstation 5 and the Xbox Series X, more and more information is continuing to trickle out, from a variety of sources.

Sony have already published a post stating that the PS4's DualShock 4 will not be compatible with PS5 titles (but did state which accessories would be compatible), but did not give too much additional information about the DualSense itself. In fact, since the PS5 reveal, new information about any PS5 accessories has been hard to come by. There is another State of Play event slated for August 6th, but it seems like a Reddit user may have leaked the news.

The leak comes via Redditor viper_on_fire, though the original post has been deleted. In its place is a second-hand recount of the original post, which also includes a brief video giving a 360 view of the DualSense. The post also recounts the Redditor's thoughts and first impression on the new controller, saying,

"The D-pad and the main buttons feel similar to the dualshock 4 with no differences overall However, the Touchpad does feel more responsive and clicky as he tried it. The triggers are interesting, the L1 and R1 dont [sic] click, they push down as they're triggers, the L2 and R2 however, felt harder to push down than normal, even without the tension points activated."

The poster next mentions the battery life, stating that, "They noted that it averaged around 3 to 4 hours more than the dualshock 4." At the moment, only Sony knows what specific change could be causing this, although the poster later makes note that, "The Lightstrip is much dimmer than the dualshock 4's lightbar." Having a smaller strip of light as opposed to the larger light bar would indeed cut down on power consumption but again, it is unsure if that is the only change made to the new DualSense that could have something to do with the battery life.

Naturally, the identity of the source chose to remain anonymous, and nobody within Sony has commented on the validity of the video (and with a new State of Play coming in a few days, it is unlikely that they will). So, until Sony makes an announcement, this is all speculative. Of course, with Sony still be relatively tight-lipped, speculation is all players have at the moment. Unfortunately, the anonymous Redditor says they were not able to use the haptic feedback nor the microphone, so there is no new information there, but according to the post, they would try to get hands on with the DualSense again later and report back to the community.

An extra three to four hours of play time may not sound like a lot to some players, but it is still a substantial improvement. The longer battery life, combined with the new USB-C charging port (which allows for faster charging), should allow for longer continuous gaming sessions with shorter breaks. Again, these quality of life changes may not be the big splashes some people were looking for, but they could very well go a long way. Sony has made it clear that they are committed to the success of the Playstation 5, so even the smallest edge over their competition would be worth it to them. Still, it would be wise to wait for an official source to corroborate the anonymous Reddit post.
