The PlayStation 5 was revealed yesterday, and the internet predictably wasted no time at all creating hundreds and hundreds of PS5 memes. Creating memes of a new product reveal is something which has almost become tradition at this point, and when Microsoft's Xbox Series X was shown off earlier this year many fans wasted no time comparing it to objects such as a fridge, a safe, and a speaker.

However, the sleek design of Sony's new PS5 has given people much more to work with in terms of mockery, and it wasn't but a few minutes after Sony's PS5 reveal event ended that social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook began to flood with different PS5 memes and console reactions. While it appears as if most fans are happy with the amount of quality titles on display, it's hard to say the same about the reception to the console's actual appearance.

From Photoshopping the PS5 onto a duck's bill to people simply propping up white envelopes next to their WiFi routers, the PS5 has already produced a ridiculous amount of memes and reactions from players. Part of this is due to how long they've been anticipating the console's reveal, and part of it is due to how drastically different the PS5 is to previous console iterations, looking more like an Xbox 360 than anything PlayStation has produced before. No matter how players feel about the design of the PS5, it's clear that some of these memes are definitely on point.

PS5 In The Lord Of The Rings

It's hard not to see the slender tower of the PS5 console as anything else other than the tower below The Eye Of Sauron after seeing this PlayStation 5/Lord of the Rings crossover meme. The flared-out edges of the PS5's design seem perfectly built for housing the evil presiding over Middle-Earth, but Sauron (and many players) would likely prefer a black version to fully bring the look together.

PS5 As The Pope's Hat

Some have joked that the PS5 looks exactly like the Pope's hat, and they're not completely wrong. However, the real Pope's hat doesn't emit a faint blue glow from the top, and is likely much lighter than this meme implies, especially considering the creator had to stretch the console to nearly the height of the Pope himself in order to make the base wide enough to fit on his head.

PS5 As A Destiny 2 Helmet

Looking at it from an angle, one could be forgiven for thinking that Sony's PS5 console looks more like some sort of space suit or piece of sci-fi equipment than it does a video game console. This is probably why so many people have begun posting PS5 memes about the machine looking like a helmet a character in Destiny would wear, with one Twitter user stating "someone pinched the warlock cheeks like a grandma."

PS5 As A WiFi Router

Perhaps the most common, most repeated form of PS5 memes so far has compared the console to a WiFi router, and it's hard not to agree with the sentiment. The design of Sony's new console looks like a lot of modern WiFi routers, and so many people agreed that the term WiFi router was temporarily trending on Twitter after the console's reveal.

PS5 As A Collared Shirt

There has always been a perception among video game players that PlayStation fans tend to think of themselves as more "elite" than Xbox fans, and nowhere has that mentality been portrayed better than by the memes which turn the PS5 into a collared shirt. The look on the kid's face, combined with the gold watch and general attitude, tells everyone who sees this meme that he can't wait for his parents to buy the PS5 for him.

PS5 As A PS2

One of the easiest (and cheapest) ways to get a PS5 is revealed by simply putting a white binder around a pre-existing PS2 in this meme. While simple, it's incredible how such little effort really does give the impression of a PlayStation 5, despite the fact that this picture could have easily been taken in the year 2001.

Sony didn't reveal an exact release date for the PlayStation 5 or how much the console will cost, but at least they did show off a wide variety of great-looking PS5 games and finally unveiled the console's design. Although there are an absolute ton of PS5 memes on the internet right now, really this only speaks to the high-profile nature of the PS5 in general, and once people get used to the design they may (or may not) stop making fun of it. For now, however, Sony and Microsoft will have to deal with the inevitable battle between PS5's Wifi Router versus Xbox's fridge a little while longer.
