The 2020 PlayStation Player Celebration is currently happening, and PS4 players can enter for a chance to win a real-life platinum achievement trophy, among other prizes. While some players tend to ignore achievements, calling attention to the fact that they offer nothing but meaningless icons and numbers, many others spend their time trying to unlock certain ones, and completing all the achievements a game has to offer often gives them a sense of pride and completion.

The trophy system was introduced to PlayStation 3 players after the success of the Xbox 360's Gamerscore function and Valve's inclusion of achievements for Steam games. Gamerscores and PlayStation trophies have since become a ubiquitous part of the everyday landscape of video games, with many developers now going out of their way to include in-jokes and hard-to-reach achievements in order to surprise players and pad out their game's longevity. Some players have lamented this change, as it seems like many of the actions which in the past would have led to bonus content, cheat codes, and extra gamplay now only activate achievements, something which is neat but doesn't give the player anything else to do.

No matter which side of the argument about the necessity of PlayStation achievement trophies one falls on, it's easy to agree that owning one in real life would be pretty cool. Now, Sony is offering fans that chance as part of their PlayStation Player Celebration event. To get some of the smaller items on offer, such as a static PS4 theme, special exclusive PS4 avatars, and a dynamic theme, players must sign up for the event via PlayStation's official website and help complete community goals by earning trophies in their game. By earning enough trophies together, the PlayStation community will unlock rewards for everyone who is signed up, as described in the event's trailer below:

Fans who want the real-life platinum PS4 achievement trophy, however, will have a little more leg work to do. They will need to sign up for the event and help complete community goals like everyone else, and then later next month, on March 17th at 11:00AM PST, they will need to return to PlayStation's official website and "answer the skill-based question below for your chance to win the exclusive PlayStation kit." It's unknown at the time what this skill-based question will involve, and the space where it will supposedly appear has only a small box with the words "Coming Soon" written. In addition to the real-life platinum PS4 trophy, the grand prize also includes a $100 voucher for the PSN Store and PSN codes for The Last of Us Remastered, God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition, and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.

Only two winners will receive real PS4 Platinum trophies and accompanying bonus games, but that doesn't mean it's not a contest worth attempting. Having a platinum trophy for any reason is pretty cool, but having one with a player's own personal PSN name engraved on would surely be a fine display piece for any collection. The competition may be tough, but someone has to win, and for players who will be playing those games and trying to get those achievements anyway, this is all just icing on the PlayStation Player Celebration cake.
