Some high-end PlayStation 4 games are less than $5 right now, but the sale ends soon. Deep discounts on downloadable games are a more common trend in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic - to the point that digital game sales have outnumbered physical sales for the first time in the gaming industry. With people spending more time at home, a plethora of games are getting more attention due to these discounts and other factors; even some AAA titles are getting beat in terms of weekly revenue on Steam. For instance, Fall Guys surpassed Horizon Zero Dawn on Steam recently in the virtual distributor’s weekly top sellers list.

Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 Remake is also currently the cheapest it's ever been, with the standard and digital deluxe editions available for $39.59 and $52.7,9 respectively on the PlayStation Store. PS4’s digital sales alone have skyrocketed in 2020, perpetuating a growth in the market that has been consistently shifting toward digital sales dominating the industry. As players and developers gear up for the next generation, everyone has their eye on the market to see how distribution trends will change with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

Sales on giant titles such as this are critical in times when many consumers are struggling financially due to being out of work, temporarily or otherwise. Spending a few dollars for hours - maybe days or weeks - of entertainment can make all the difference in providing a temporary reprieve from stress and boredom.

Under normal circumstances, sales with prices this low typically offer games that aren't much to get excited about and may not even be worth  the $5 it costs to purchase them. This time, however, PS4 users can get their hands on some big-name games that, while not brand new, still offer intriguing gameplay and stories for those who have never played them. Regardless of the reasons for the sale, whether to give consumers a break during the pandemic or to encourage the continued shift towards digital sales, good opportunities should be seized.
