Firmware Update 9.00 just went live on PS4 and a number of players have reported encountering issues that significantly impact the performance of the console. Sony deployed PlayStation 4's Update 9.00 beta in late July, giving testers a chance to try out a wide range of new features.

One of the update's most notable additions allows players to finally view their PS5 trophies on last-gen PlayStation hardware. The deletion of Message groups serves as another major change that many a PS4 user should find welcoming. Moreover, parent accounts can now receive PS4 and PlayStation App notifications whenever a child requests permission to play certain types of games. PS5 owners gained access to an even more significant set of changes today, chief among them being the enabling of M.2 SSD expansion support for game and media storage on the console. It would seem the PS4's 9.00 firmware counts as the only one causing problems, though.

Following the rollout of Firmware Update 9.00, PS4 users began posting found issues on a Reddit thread, as spotted by Push Square. One Redditor, TheIronGhost, claimed the patch significantly slowed down their console. In a subsequent post, the user said they were able to open the PS Store after several reboots, though operating the PS4 itself remains a problem. Siebe_13 similarly faced slow-down issues that required a system restart before booting up a game. A Redditor named Kylianx and a few others shared experiences of receiving "DNS server issue warnings" after installing the system software patch. "I've tried restarting several times but nothing works," the user added. According to messages in the thread, these issues are occurring across the base, Slim, and Pro PS4 models. But there also exists a continent of PS4 owners who say they've yet to notice any troubles after installing 9.00.

PS4 Will Get Up To 4 Years Of Support From Sony After PS5 Launch

At the time of writing, it's unclear if Sony will address the reported issues by rolling back the system software update on PS4. Here's to hoping these troubles and any other underlying problems will receive a resolution soon, however.

Sony aims to support the PS4 long-term, though the newest console continues to sell like hotcakes. In addition to third and second party experiences, a few major first-party titles will come to the last-gen platform next year. Notably, PS4 players can look forward to titles such as Horizon: Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7, and God of War Ragnarök.
