Sony has confirmed some of the games that will be included with the new PlayStation Plus subscription service, revealing that higher tiers will include hits like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Demon's Souls. This restructuring of the long-time game subscription is being seen by many as a response to Microsoft's highly successful Xbox Game Pass, although there have been arguments that the new PlayStation Plus service is worse than PS Now, Sony's well-established games streaming platform.

The updated PlayStation Plus will be launching this summer and will be split into three tiers: PlayStation Plus Essential is virtually no different from what PlayStation owners have come to expect from the current iteration of PS Plus, allowing online multiplayer access, monthly games, and other assorted perks; PlayStation Plus Extra includes everything in the previous tier but also bundles the games available through PlayStation Now's streaming and on-demand options, a list that is getting expanded through this rollout; PlayStation Plus Premium offers all the benefits of the previous two tiers but also offers a selection of classic PS1, PS2, and PSP titles. All tiers of the service will include access to the PlayStation Plus Collection, which includes popular games like 2018's God of War and Bloodborne.

More information has come to light regarding the games included in the higher tiers of PlayStation Plus via the PlayStation blog and a subsequent post from the PlayStation Twitter account. Those who subscribe to the Extra and Premium tiers will gain access to a huge selection of first-party titles, including Ghost of TsushimaDeath Stranding, and Demon's Souls. Third-party hits like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Assassin's Creed Valhalla will also be included alongside indies like Hollow KnightCeleste, and Dead Cells. All of these titles are joined by a smaller selection of classic games from previous PlayStation generations. The list of PS4 and PS5 games included with PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium/Deluxe Plans is as follows:

With a solid mix of AAA successes and indie gems, the new PS Plus service is looking promising. Leaks related to classic PlayStation games included in the service came before the official announcement, and many of those leaked titles have made it into the selection. Additionally, the AAA, contemporary games available from third and first-party studios is substantial and will be expanded over time.

However, one of the most common criticisms leveled against the new PlayStation Plus service is the price. Xbox Game Pass for console is priced at $9.99 per month, which is the same as PlayStation Plus Essential, but access to the aforementioned games only comes with an Extra or Premium subscription, which cost $15 and $18, respectively. The selection of games may be able to compete with Game Pass, but PlayStation users could be turned off by the cost of entry.
