Sony announced earlier today that the PS Now October free games will be headlined by Days GoneMediEvil, and Friday the 13th, with all of them coming to the service today, October 6, 2020. PS Now is Sony's subscription service that gives players access to a library of titles for a monthly fee, and operates somewhat similarly to Xbox Game Pass, though the services have their distinctive qualities, with the latter often praised for its more distinctive swath of titles.

Sony recently announced its intention to remodel its subscription services a little with the inclusion of PlayStation Plus Collection, which will come when the PS5 release date finally arrives. PlayStation Plus Collection will gives players who purchase a PS5 and a PS Plus subscription access to a small library of select PS4 games for free. The service won't, however, replace PS Now, which remains a part of Sony's future plans for its next-gen console and will still be the go-to game streaming for PlayStation owners.

In the interim between now and the long-awaited PS5 launch, however, there are still free PS Now games to give away to subscribers. The PS Now free games for October were announced earlier today on the PlayStation Blog and have been released as well, with headliner Days Gone occupying the spotlight alongside a roster of spooky-themed games for the Halloween month. Days Gone is a divisive PS4 exclusive that failed to impress the same way other exclusives like Ghost of Tsushima have since, and it makes sense to give it away to give players who weren't willing to purchase it outright a chance to experience it ahead of next-gen planning.

There are some low-key interesting options being added on top of Days Gone though, especially Friday the 13th and MediEvilFriday the 13th may have been supplanted by other competitors in the asymmetrical multiplayer genre, but it's still a fun experience, and it will likely do quite well in the buildup to Halloween proper. MediEvil, on the other hand, was marred by poor critical scores that weren't synchronous with the much more positive user experiences that fans reported. As a result, interested parties who stayed away get a chance to see if the game suits their own tastes while getting more eyes on the franchise as a whole.

The PS Now free games for October are certainly on-point thematically for a month that is often all about horror or spooky vibes. Still, it's hard not to feel like most people are already looking toward the horizon of next-gen consoles and the games that will come after their launch, and it's those consoles that will be the proving ground for Sony's renewed interested in making PS Now a viable and popular subscription service.
