Apple offers two AppleCare+ options for the latest iPhone models: AppleCare+ and AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss. Any Apple hardware purchase comes with a one-year limited warranty. This warranty covers hardware defects but does not cover accidental damage such as a cracked screen and will not cover battery replacements unless the battery was defective out of the box.

The standard AppleCare+ coverage lasts up to two years and does allow two accidental damage claims within 12 months. This includes a cracked display, cracked back glass, and battery replacements. Of course, the user will still get unlimited free hardware defect replacements within two years.

And as the name entails, AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss covers precisely that, in addition to everything the standard AppleCare+ warranty covers. Though, Apple notes that in order to be covered by theft or loss, Find My iPhone must be enabled at the time the device is lost or stolen and must remain enabled during the claims process. AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss is only available on the iPhone XR, XS, XS Max, and later, including the iPhone SE (2nd generation). Apple charges $149 for a lost or stolen iPhone incident, which is much better than having to pay full price for a new iPhone.

Extending Coverage & Other Options

Pricing for the theft and loss plans varies by device. For example, AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss will cost $219 for two years or $11.49 a month for an iPhone 13 or iPhone 13 mini. And for the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, it'll cost $269 for two years or $13.49 a month. AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss can be expanded beyond two years by indefinitely paying monthly or calling Apple right before your two years are up if you paid upfront.

AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss is a fantastic option if an iPhone gets stolen or if the user misplaced it. Of course, with the Find My network and later iPhones, the person can still track the iPhone for a short time after it's been turned off. Some may see this and not opt for the plan. Using the Find My network is an excellent option if a user accidentally left an iPhone at a restaurant, as it'll likely still be there hours later. But, a thief may immediately try and take an iPhone apart or keep it off for an extended period. In both instances, the Find My network will be rendered virtually useless.
