What happened in The Promised Neverland's season 2 finale and will there be a third season? Produced by CloverWorks, The Promised Neverland is a dark fantasy anime series based on Kaiu Shirai’s manga. It’s set in the not-too-distant future at an orphanage named Grace Field House and follows a trio of orphans – Emma, Norman and Ray – who discover they’re not waiting to be adopted but are actually being harvested as food for demons.

During the first season of The Promised Neverland, the orphans started plotting their escape but experienced several setbacks, including Norman being shipped out as demon food and Ray being revealed as a traitor. By the time the season 1 finale rolled around Emma, Ray and several other orphans set Grace Field House on fire and scaled the massive wall surrounding the orphanage before trotting off into the unknown. A flashback revealed the orphans’ seemingly tyrannical caretaker Isabella was a more sympathetic character than she first appeared, and she even went so far as to wish the escapees good luck.

The Promised Land season 2 focused mostly on Emma, Ray and their fellow escapees as they tried to survive in the demon-infested wilderness that surrounds the orphanage. Along the way, they discovered exactly why humans had entered a pact with demons to provide them with food and that not all demons were bad when they met a pair of friendly creatures named Sonju and Mujika. Emma and Ray also found out that Norman was in fact alive but ended up being lured back to Grace Field House when the villainous overseer of the orphan farm's Peter Ratri announced the remaining orphans were to be shipped out. The penultimate episode of season 2 saw Emma, Ray and Norman arrive to save their fellow orphans while Isabella rebelled against Ratri but what happened in The Promised Land season 2 finale?

The Promised Neverland

In The Promised Neverland finale, Emma offered Peter Ratri a truce and the chance to flee to the human world with the orphans but the villain instead took his own life. With Ratri dead, Emma, Norman and Ray were able to send the orphans to the human world via a magical doorway along with the reformed Isabella, who they forgave for her past transgressions. Isabella and the orphans eventually arrived in what appeared to be New York where they were accepted by human society and went on to lead happy, normal lives.

However, The Promised Land season 2 finale didn’t give Emma, Norman and Ray a happy ending straight away. The plucky trio and a band of their orphan comrades decided to stay in the demon world to liberate children from other orphanages and forge a new deal with the demons that wouldn’t involve raising kids as livestock. A montage showed that the trio achieved their quest and that their demon pal Mujika was crowned the new queen of the demon world. The very end of The Promised Land season 2 finale was set a few years in the future and saw Emma, Norman and Ray finally get their happy ending when they reunited with the rest of the Grace Field Orphans in New York.

As for whether there’ll be another season of the anime series, unfortunately, season 3 doesn’t look likely. Kaiu Shirai’s original manga concluded its run in 2020, so there isn’t any more source material for The Promised Land anime series to adapt.
