Official 'Prometheus' Synopsis; Ben Foster Joins The Cast

20th Century Fox has released an official synopsis for Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus', and Ben Foster (Pandorum) has been confirmed as a cast member.

There are numerous rumored plot details floating around for Ridley Scott's Prometheus, detailing how the sci-fi flick connects to the Alien franchise mythology. Just the other day, a supposed Prometheus plot outline hit the Web, revealing a potential storyline that (essentially) gelled with Scott's previous claims that his film is "the story of creation, the gods, and the man who stood against them."

20th Century Fox has already disputed said Prometheus synopsis - and has gone a step further by actually releasing its own description of the project. But does the official studio line actually shed some light on the film's connection to the Alien series?

JoBlo has confirmed that Ben Foster (Pandorum, X-Men: The Last Stand) is the latest addition to the Prometheus cast, which also includes Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, and Guy Pearce, among others. What little information has been revealed about the characters in Scott's new sci-fi endeavor has begged for comparison to the original 1979 Alien movie - with Rapace playing a capable female scientist (the "Ellen Ripley role") and Fassbender's silent confirmation that he'll be playing an android, a la Ian Holm in Alien.

However, all of the rumors circulating around Prometheus so far have suggested it'll be heavier on the sci-fi aspects than Alien, which is very much a hybrid of sci-fi and horror tropes. Judging by the official description of the project, that assumption looks to be correct.

Here is the official lowdown on Prometheus:

Visionary filmmaker Ridley Scott returns to the genre he helped define, creating an original science fiction epic set in the most dangerous corners of the universe. The film takes a team of scientists and explorers on a thrilling journey that will test their physical and mental limits and strand them on a distant world, where they will discover the answers to our most profound questions and to life’s ultimate mystery.

While Fox insists that the recently-released Prometheus plot outline is inaccurate, the studio's vague synopsis alone isn't sufficient enough to squash the rumored description entirely. The film will clearly touch on some big philosophical issues (the purpose of and forces responsible for human existence) against the backdrop of an unsettling science-fiction tale - similar to Scott's Blade Runner or Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Whether creatures like the Space Jockeys and the Alien xenomorphs will serve as the "gods" that clash with the human space explorers in Prometheus - or if the picture will feature entirely new extraterrestrial beings - is anyone's guess right now.

Props nonetheless ought to be given to Fox studio heads and Scott for striving to retain secrecy about the film, which sounds much more interesting than just a straightforward prequel to the original Alien movie. Prometheus is instead shaping up to be a grand scale, thought-provoking sci-fi tale that will be brought to life by an excellent cast, a great filmmaker, and some top notch production values, to boot.

So long as the movie doesn't suffer too much from what one could dub Star Wars prequel-itis (ex. attempting to tie-in too closely to the events of the original Alien, aping the plot twists of its predecessors, relying too heavily on CGI, etc.), it could be a memorable adventure in its own right.

Prometheus will arrive in theaters on June 8th, 2012.
