'Prometheus' Photo Gallery: Meet the Ship's Crew

Nearly a dozen newly-released images from Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus' offer a better look at the film's team of (doomed?) futuristic space explorers.

So much of the beautiful imagery conjured up by Ridley Scott and his production team for Prometheus - including, the darkly immense landscape vistas captured by director of photography Dariusz Wolski (Dark City) - focuses on the sheer scale of the film. It's therefore easy to lose sight of the talented and easy-on-the-eyes cast assembled for Scott's return expedition to Alien territory.

Today, we have a new photo gallery which remedies that issue by instead focusing exclusively on the human stars of Scott's sci-fi/horror film - ranging from fan-favorites like Idris Elba (Luther) and Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class), to Oscar-winner Charlize Theron and the original Swedish Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Noomi Rapace.

Prometheus revolves around a 21st century space mission to uncover the truth behind a mysterious recurring set of pictographs found in various archaeological sites on Earth, which suggest that extraterrestrials may have been partially responsible for the earliest forms of human civilization. That mission unifies a motley crew of scientists (including Rapace), military personnel (Sean Harris), a state-of-the-art android (Fassbender), and a corporate representative (Theron) to oversee the trip to another world - one which goes horribly wrong, as has been made vividly transparent by the footage unveiled so far.

Prometheus aims to investigate cosmological themes and ideas concerning the nature of human evolution, while also integrating the "body horror" elements and other-worldly monster tropes pioneered by Scott's original disturbing brew of science fiction (ie. Alien).

It's all the more fitting then that what we continue to see of the characters in Prometheus recalls players from not only that aforementioned 1979 film, but also Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. Even Fassbender's closing line in the official Prometheus trailer ("Big things have small beginnings.") is delivered in such a chillingly emotionless, yet rational manner as to make 2001's HAL 9000 proud... if he was capable of pride, that is.

Prometheus opens in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D theaters around the U.S. on June 8th, 2012.
