Netflix officially released The Prom movie trailer for its upcoming musical. This film adaption was inspired by the Broadway musical of the same name that premiered in 2018. The inspiring LGBTQ+ love story was seen as an underdog during awards season. However, it did manage to take home one Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical. While the show only ran on Broadway for one year, executive producer Ryan Murphy created the film to prolong its legacy.

Netflix released The Prom trailer on Thanksgiving. Netflix received backlash after releasing promo pictures that highlighted its A-List stars - Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman and Andrew Rannells - while putting central players Jo Ellen Pellman and Ariana Debose, who play the central couple Emma and Alyssa, in the background. However, the trailer splits its time between storylines pretty evenly. Emma (Pellman) sits at her computer and tells the story of how her high school shut down the prom upon hearing that she was going to bring her girlfriend Alyssa (Debose) as her date. The trailer showcases emotional moments for the teenager as her relationship is put down in front of the entire PTA board and the impact it has on her mental health. Viewers even get a sneak peak of Emma singing "Dance With You."

The rest of the trailer, as expected, features Streep, Corden, Kidman and Rannells as their Broadway star characters discover Emma's story and decide to travel to Indiana to save her high school's prom. As indicated in the trailer, these characters pack the film with comedic relief while also being the agents of change the town needs. The trailer brilliantly captures the liveliness and inspiring message of the musical, but it remains to be seen if the movie as a whole will stack up. Viewers will have to wait until December when The Prom premieres on Netflix to find out.

A group of down-on-their-luck Broadway stars shake up a small Indiana town as they rally behind a teen who just wants to attend prom with her girlfriend.
