While surviving the blocky biomes of Minecraft is relatively easy, enduring the harsh apocalypse of Project Zomboid is not. This survival indie game is similar to Don't Starve, where everything is trying to kill the player. Therefore, players will need sound and strategic planning to survive the zombie-crawling wilderness of Project Zomboid.

First, survivalists should start by searching for a weapon. Just as a wooden Minecraft sword is much more effective than a tool, Project Zomboid fans should always be actively looking for better weapons to use on their foes. There are many things that a player should begin to collect and gather upon spawning into a world. Yet, weaponry should take priority as using crafting items or food won't stop the zombie hoards from eating the player. Additionally, keep in mind that a weapon's durability is not infinite. Hence, a smart way to preserve a good weapon would be to knock down zombies and stop on their heads to save one's weapon for tougher situations in the future.

Another piece of advice that Project Zomboid players should consider is to use running only as a last resort for escape. Running is loud and will attract the unwanted attention of mobs. Additionally, it will unnecessarily drain stamina. Similar to zombies in Minecraft, the enemies in Project Zomboid are slow and can be easily out-walked and out-maneuvered by the player. If a player needs to regain their stamina, they can find a safe, secluded area and sit down to rest.

How to Survive in Project Zomboid

While it isn't possible to perform "stealth takedowns" in Project Zomboid, there is a way to sneakily take out zombies without luring in an entire hoard. While crouching, use the Whisper action to attract nearby zombies and quietly take them out. This approach allows players to clear a small area with useful supplies without getting into a massive battle. However, even in this somewhat safer situation, players should always have a "Plan B" or escape plan if things go awry. While one may not be a problem, an unexpected group of zombies, even in Minecraft, can potentially overwhelm the player and end a playthrough.

Next, while collecting and saving items for later isn't a bad strategy, hoarding too much can become the death sentence of a player. Therefore, players always need to consider and gather only what they need in the present moment, understanding that they can return later on for any item. Being over-encumbered or taking excessive risks for good loot is never a good idea. If players are having trouble finding supplies within populated areas, then going into the woods and using the "foraging mechanic" would be wise. However, be wary that this action will significantly reduce one's vision, so be sure an area is clear before foraging for scraps and crafting materials.

Finally, like the interactive maps in Minecraft, players can make use of Project Zomboid's mapping system and use writing utensils to mark essential locations like their safe house. Breaking into vehicles and using them for travel while revealing the map is also an excellent survival strategy as walking long distances will increase the risk of death. Nevertheless, make sure never to break the window on the driver's side, as that will make the driver more vulnerable to zombie attacks.
