New 'Prometheus' Viral Video Teases Weyland Industries Recruiting at Comic-Con

Prometheus at Comic Con

For a minute, it seemed as though Prometheus buzz was beginning to die down - now that the film is out and critics (read our review) as well as audiences (join our spoilers discussion) have shared their opinions on the film. However, a new viral video (with two more en route) seems to indicate that 20th Century Fox might still have a few more surprises in store for fans of Ridley Scott's return to the Alien universe - since the film will have a presence at Comic-Con (despite sitting in theaters for nearly a month).

Now that the film has proven to be a box office success, could Fox be teasing the inevitable Prometheus sequel that Scott and writer Damon Lindelof have been discussing in interviews - or possibly one of the famed auteur's Director's Cut rereleases? Probably not.

While it'd certainly be exciting for the Prometheus faithful to see a sequel tease, as well as any fans still hoping that Scott will eventually connect the new storyline to Alien, given that the director is set to work on the Blade Runner sequel next, it's unlikely that we'll be hearing concrete Prometheus 2 news anytime soon. A Director's Cut rerelease is similarly unlikely - given that we're not talking about a movie that blew box office predictions out of the water and encouraged multiple trips to the theater.

At this point, any Prometheus marketing efforts have to be in service of something yet to come - as most film studios use Comic-Con as a targeted word-of-mouth machine and, even if everyone at the show was reignited with passion for the film, it'll be fighting to stay in the box office top 10 by that point.

As a result, it's certainly possible that the Comic-Con presence is designed to raise awareness for the film's home release in October - which could also mean a Director's Cut option is still on the table. Of course, it could be nothing more than a minor promotion for a smaller tie-in - something along the lines of the recent Prometheus: The Art of the Film book.

The viral tease is disturbing enough but one look at the Project Prometheus Comic-Con webpage hints at even more creepy possibilities - specifically the use of the word "Recruiting." What could Weyland Industries want with a bunch of comic book, movie, and TV geeks? Let's just hope it doesn't have anything to do with black goo.
