Netflix released the first trailer for the upcoming sci-fi action film Project Power, starring Jamie Foxx. Foxx plays a former soldier on a mission to hunt down drug dealers who are pushing a unique drug and have kidnapped his daughter. After Netflix's recent success with the comic book-based action thriller movie The Old Guard and Foxx's critical triumphs Just Mercy and Baby Driver, the superhero-themed Project Power could see Netflix with another hit on the streaming platform.
Project Power revolves around a pill that gives its users random superpowers. The powers range from super-strength to invisibility. However, the user doesn't know what power they will gain and only has the superpower for five minutes. Foxx leads the film, which also stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a police detective and Dominque Fishback as a young drug dealer. The supporting cast includes Rodrigo Santoro, Colson Baker, also known as rapper Machine Gun Kelly, Allen Maldonado, Amy Landecker, and Courtney B. Vance.
The trailer for Project Power, which Netflix just premiered, shows Foxx, Gordon-Levitt, and Fishback's characters team up to bring down the dangerous source of the special drug hitting the streets of New Orleans. The drug appears to be doing more harm than good as the main characters fight against an increase in crime in the city caused by its citizens' newfound superpowers. The trailer boasts a lot of action, showing Foxx in a face-off with a person with fiery powers, and Gordon-Levitt even taking a bullet to the face after the pill makes him bulletproof. Later scenes in the trailer and recently released first-look images show Foxx's character also taking the drug to fight against bad guys.
Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman directed the film. The two previously directed the documentary Catfish, the thriller Nerve, and two Paranormal Activity sequels. Project Power, however, is their biggest movie to date, adding onto Netflix's list of big blockbuster releases. The screenplay was written by Mattson Tomlin, who also co-wrote The Batman with its director Matt Reeves.
The trailer certainly has a gritty look and feel to it so viewers can expect some thrilling action mixed with genuine realism, especially from the main characters who are three very different people teaming up for the greater good. The action-packed trailer brings an exciting appeal to the upcoming movie. Viewers can check out Foxx and Gordon-Levitt in action when Project Power is released on Netflix on August 14.
