With the announcement that a Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake is on the way, Ubisoft’s mid-2000s Prince of Persia series is getting a deep discount on Steam. Ubisoft has evidently had plans to revive the franchise for quite a while now, getting as far as to produce a prototype - footage from which leaked online eight years ago before finally being noticed by fans.

While the first public acknowledgment of the Prince of Persia reboot was made today at Ubisoft Forward, it didn’t exactly come as a surprise. The game leaked on a retailer’s website with a 2020 release date earlier this year back in August, with games reporter Jason Schreier strongly suggesting that the leak was legitimate. Schreier then added more fuel to the fire by stating outright that Prince of Persia would appear at Ubisoft Forward on a podcast last week.

As Ubisoft was finally announcing its Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake today, it also put its original take on the series on sale for an all-time great price. As Twitter deal hunter Wario64 spotted, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Warrior Within, The Forgotten Sands, The Two Thrones, and the 2008 Prince of Persia reboot are all available on Steam for just $1.99 each. The sale only runs through this coming Monday, September 14th, so anyone wanting to catch up on the series’ history should act fast.

It was clear even before the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake became an open secret that Ubisoft wasn’t quite ready to let the franchise disappear. Ubisoft isn’t one to let a guaranteed money-maker go to waste, after all, and that’s certainly what the series has been. Earlier this year, Ubisoft announced that the Prince would be heading to For Honor in a special seasonal event, likely hoping to get the series back on players’ minds before announcing its actual return.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is an extremely well-regarded game, and players now have two chances to decide for themselves if it holds up today. There’s really no excuse not to give it a shot with this latest sale, but for anyone who just can’t get over its nearly 20-year-old quirks, a shot at a revised edition is on the horizon. The Prince of Persia series has left a massive influence on action games in general, and going back to see the start of so many trends that are taken for granted today is a history lesson well worth its price.
