'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies' Needs A New Director

Mike White Pride and Prejudice and Zombies movie

The cinematic treatment of Seth Grahame-Smith's Pride and Prejudice and Zombies has trudged to a halt once more, now that writer/director Mike White (Year of the Dog) has been forced to back out and potential star Anne Hathaway will be too busy playing Catwoman in Batman 3 to join the Regency era romance/horror mashup.

White was essentially set to helm P&P&Z for over two months, but is now the second filmmaker that has left the project, following in the footsteps of the increasingly busy David O. Russell.

Deadline says that a preexisting commitment to HBO provided an unsolvable scheduling conflict and was the reason for White dropping out of the Jane Austen comedy of manners-meets-zombies flick. While White's departure from Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is unlikely to induce too many tears amongst those waiting to see this movie, he did have a strong background in handling dark comedy - and is arguably as good a fit to bring this bizarre concoction to life (pun intended) as anyone else.

Lionsgate has big plans for this adaptation, which ranks alongside The Hunger Games as one of the studio's upcoming projects with significant box office potential. So now that neither Russell or White will be lending their quirkier sensibilities to P&P&Z, who else immediately comes to mind as a relatively obvious choice to handle this film?

Over half a dozen directors were being considered at one point to helm this tale of corsets, pickaxes, and flesh-eating monsters, and any one of them could be back in the running, now that White is out. Here's a wild card suggestion to consider while we wait for more official news: what about giving the job to someone like Jason Eisner, the mind behind Hobo with a Shotgun?

Assuming that Hobo is the balls-to-the-wall, ridiculously exhilarating exploitation flick promised in the Unrated trailer, wouldn't it be interesting to see the filmmaker responsible for it tackle a story about refined socialites laying bloody waste to gore-seeking zombies? The likelihood of Eisner landing a high-profile job like P&P&Z is extremely remote (to put it mildly) and there's no guarantee that Hobo with a Shotgun is going to deliver the goods. But still...

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is a priority for Lionsgate, so look for the studio to hire on another director to take White's place in the near future. Be sure to share your thoughts with us about the project in general in the comments section below and on Twitter @screenrant and @feynmanguy.
