While the original Prey video game seemed to lay the foundations for one of the more memorable sci-fi franchises in recent memory, developers Arkhane Studios and publishers Bethesda Softworks have since been very vocal about their upcoming new Prey release - a second entry into the franchise that serves as more of a reboot than a direct sequel to the original game. Though the concepts from the first Prey game will live on, none of the previous development work that Human Head Studios made on their failed attempt at bringing Prey 2 to life, is going to be used in the next installment.

Announced in June during Bethesda’s E3 press conference, Prey gained a lot of press coverage and hype was immediately at a high, but details surrounding the new game weren’t then going to come thick and fast. Now though, a very important piece of information about the game has been revealed.

With the release of a brand new gameplay trailer today (watch it above), Bethesda Softworks also announced that Prey will officially drop worldwide on Friday, May 5th, 2017 for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. More information was also given in a newly-released synopsis for the title, which you can check out below:

“When you awaken aboard Talos I, an immense space station orbiting the moon in the year 2032, you find yourself as the key subject of an experiment meant to alter humanity forever – but things have gone terribly wrong. The space station has been overrun by hostile aliens and you are now being hunted. As you dig into the dark secrets of Talos I and your own past, you must survive using the tools found on the station, your wits, weapons, and mind-bending abilities to defeat the Typhon alien threat.

“Fans who pre-order Prey will receive the exclusive Cosmonaut Shotgun Pack. The pre-order bonus consists of Morgan Yu’s family heirloom Margrave shotgun and tools to fight threats aboard Talos I including: three Neuromods players can spend to acquire new abilities, two Medkits, a Fabrication plan to create the Shotgun and Ammo, a starter kit for building tools and weapons, and a unique upgrade to help players preserve their limited resources.”

Bringing brand new characters and a new mission to the world of Prey, it looks as if the games’ developers are coming through on their promise to make a real go at reinventing the series. Taking place in a timeline where United States President John F. Kennedy was never assassinated and in turn, pumped more money into the space program, we’ll see the results of what could have been if these fictional events had become a reality. When alien beings begin to jump in on the action however, Earth’s fate is put in the hands of our protagonist, and gamers are tasked with saving all of humanity.

The original Prey game was widely respected and given great reviews by many critics, so it’s going to be interesting to see if those behind this ‘reboot’ can match or even top that success. It’s a brave move bringing a whole new game to those who have been waiting for another installment to the Prey series since playing the original game, and one that could backfire immensely.

In saying that, if there’s one thing the new gameplay trailer proves, it’s that Prey (2017) is going to be a tense, addictive and compelling journey for whoever’s behind the controller. Following the critical acclaim that recent Bethesda release Dishonored 2 received, there are high expectations. Let’s hope they’re ones the company can live up to.
