Director Dan Trachtenberg, who helms the new Predator movie Prey, opens up about his favorite emotionally charged moment in the upcoming film. Prey is the latest installment in the Predator franchise, trying to set itself apart from its predecessors, offering a unique story that takes place 300 years ago. The film will follow Naru, a skilled Comanche warrior who must protect her tribe from one of the first alien Predators to land on Earth, giving audiences a distinct departure from the modern time period and high-tech weaponry.
Trachtenberg, who previously helmed 10 Cloverfield Lane, is directing from a script by Patrick Aison. Screen Rant spoke with Trachtenberg during San Diego Comic-Con about Prey and his favorite moment in the film. According to the director, Midthunder's Naru lets out a war cry in the movie, which he states happens at an unexpected time, but has deemed it his favorite moment. Dan Trachtenberg: "No offense to Dakota and Taabe, but Amber's war cry in this movie is my favorite thing in the movie. It happens in a very unexpected place; it's not where you think it would be. And I think it's the most emotional part of the entire flick, so Amber wins. [Dakota has] some great screaming as well."
The Predator films are generally known for their action spectacle, violence, and creature effects. And while they can offer emotional elements, like Quinn's relationship with his son in 2018's The Predator, the franchise isn't known for being emotionally charged. However, with Prey taking great care to distinguish itself within the franchise, introducing more dramatic depth to the characters and the world seems like a natural way to endear audiences to the new film. With the earlier word of mouth being so positive, it also appears that the creative team made the right decision for the franchise.
Prey is set to release exclusively on Hulu on August 5, another distinct change for the franchise, as all prior installments, including the Alien vs. Predator films, were released in theaters. However, the franchise hasn't landed critically or commercially in some time, meaning a streaming release could be ideal for the die-hard fans, even allowing easy access for those who may not venture out to a theater for a Predator film.
