Being a teenager is hard. Dealing with a missing friend and a mysterious figure named "A?" Well, that's even harder, which is why the main characters on Pretty Little Liars aren't always very easy to like.

Rosewood is a pretty crazy place and when Alison DiLaurentis returns, her old friends are left questioning everything they ever knew. While they have to tackle a wild mystery and fight for their lives, they also have homework and love lives and parents, so it makes sense that they would behave in rude ways sometimes. Some of the major players on this beloved teen drama are easier to root for than others, that's for sure.

Alison DiLaurentis

Sure, the story of Pretty Little Liars might begin when Alison DiLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse) disappears, but that doesn't mean that she's a very likable character. Ali, in fact, is a classic mean girl who wants everyone to pay attention to her. Of course, once she's missing from the fancy town of Rosewood, no one can forget her.

Ali does become a bit sweeter as time goes on, but she can't really make up for lost time or her true Queen Bee nature.

Ashley Marin

Ashley talking to someone in PLL

Laura Leighton's PLL character, Ashley, isn't super easy to like. She gets involved with a cop in the first season and while she tries her best to help her daughter Hanna, it doesn't feel like she really knows what she's doing. She always looks a bit like a deer in headlights, so it's hard to put trust and faith in her.

Mona Vanderwaal

Janel Parish as Mona on Pretty Little Liars

Mona (Janel Parrish) has some great quotes on the show, making her a fascinating character.

However, Mona is tough to like. She seems mean one minute and like she's on Hanna's side the next, and it's hard to know where she really stands. Sometimes she's helping "A" and sometimes she's helping the liars, and it's definitely confusing.

Ezra Fitz

Ezra smiling in Pretty Little Liars

Ian Harding's character Ezra Fitz can be tough to root for at times. Although he's always nice to Aria, he is her teacher and he's much older than her. It feels uncomfortable that he's happy dating a teenager.

Once fans get past the inappropriate age difference between the two characters, Ezra has a few other issues, like the fact that he was stalking Ali to write a book about her. While he's not a bad person and it's cool that he's a a literary type like Aria, Ezra can be a little creepy, and that never really goes away even though the two characters end up together.

Spencer Hastings

Fans have to admire Spencer Hastings (Troian Bellisario) and her work ethic. She does what she puts her mind to and deals with a pretty tough family situation.

Unfortunately, sometimes Spencer can be mean and selfish, and she isn't always as caring and compassionate as she should be. It's also fair to say that fans feel a bit negatively toward her as they don't love the reveal at the end of the series that she has an evil twin.

Aria Montgomery

Aria looking serious in Pretty Little Liars

Aria Montgomery can be tough as the character, played by Lucy Hale, can act much younger than she actually is. She has a tendency to want what she wants immediately and she's not always patient or mature. It doesn't feel like she always has her own best interests at heart.

Hanna Marin

Hanna Marin (Ashley Benson) is fairly likable, but she has her moments of being sarcastic and negative.

At the beginning of the show, Hanna is healing from her parents' divorce and she doesn't feel like she's very loved. She shoplifts and suffers from some insecurities, and as she becomes closer to the other girls, she starts becoming a lot nicer. But sometimes, it's hard not to want to tell Hanna to take a deep breath and be in a better mood.

Caleb Rivers

Tyler Blackburn's PLL character, Caleb Rivers, is one of the sweeter people on the show. At first, he has a very mysterious aura around him, as no one knows that much about him.

Once Hanna falls for Caleb, she gets to know him better, and she realizes what a gentle soul he is. Caleb didn't grow up in a loving family and so he does his best to take care of himself, and once fans knew his backstory, they appreciated him even more.

Emily Fields

Shay Mitchell's Pretty Little Liars character, Emily Fields, is one of the kindest people in Rosewood, making her very easy to love.

Fans sympathize with Emily as she has loved her best friend Ali from afar for so long. But they finally get together, and no one deserves happiness more than Emily does.

Toby Cavanaugh

Toby Cavanaugh might not be the most perfect love interest for Spencer, but played by Keegan Allen, he's the most likable character on the show.

A sweet and agreeable person, all Toby wants to do is protect the people he cares about. He's loyal and makes friends easily. He's a calming presence despite all of the wild things that are going on in Rosewood, and that's important.
