The Umbrella Academy season 4 will be the show's final season, which means some main characters are bound to die before the story ends. Season 1 of the Netflix original, inspired by the comic book series of the same name by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, premiered in 2019. The Umbrella Academy season 2 followed in 2020 and season 3 aired in the summer of 2022. Netflix announced soon after the release of The Umbrella Academy season 3 that they had renewed it for season 4, which would be the last season.
The Umbrella Academy season 3 ends with a universe reset triggered by Sir Reginald Hargreeves, with some help from his adopted daughter from the original timeline, Allison. This reset almost kills the remaining members of the Umbrella Academy and the Sparrow Academy, but they survive and now exist in a new universe. They don't have their superpowers, but their recent injuries were healed, and some characters were brought back to life.
Like the first three seasons, The Umbrella Academy season 4 will probably have a looming apocalypse. That said, the show has deviated considerably from the comic book series, and now surpassed its timeline, so it's difficult to know how everything will wrap up. But it's possible that not every character will survive. So who will live, and who will die at the end of The Umbrella Academy?
Luther & Sloane Hargreeves
Luther, a.k.a. Number One, dies at the end of The Umbrella Academy season 3, episode 9, "Seven Bells." He is resurrected at the end of episode 10, "Oblivion" in the universe reset. Given he already had his dramatic death scene and resurrection, it seems unlikely he would die in The Umbrella Academy season 4 as this would have less impact. However, he is a proud protector of his family and could give his life to save others.
Luther's wife Sloane, the Sparrow Academy's Number Five, will likely meet the same fate as Luther—either living happily ever after or dying at his side. She is the only character unaccounted for in the new universe, which means Luther will be spending season 4 trying to get her back. Her death at the end of such a search would feel cheap. The likelihood that the newlyweds will permanently die seems low. Hopefully, Luther and Sloane get a happy ending.
Diego Hargreeves
Before The Umbrella Academy season 3, Diego (Number Two) is the Umbrella Academy's sibling who is most likely to jump into danger. He is still headstrong in season 4 but now has a baby on the way with his girlfriend Lila. The two even speak about trying to live through the dangers of Hotel Oblivion, so they can be a family on the other side. Diego may have originally been a likely candidate to die in battle, but he now seems safe.
Allison Hargreeves
Allison, Number Three of the original Umbrellas, is almost a villain in The Umbrella Academy season 3. Her motives are understandable, she lost her husband and daughter to time travel at the end of The Umbrella Academy season 2. But she murders Viktor's pseudo-son Harlan and works with Sir Reginald, harming her family in the process. She ultimately realizes her mistake and kills Reginald, although he is brought back in the new universe. Allison also gets her husband, Ray, and her daughter, Claire, back in the reboot, but at what cost? She may still have to prove herself to her family, and that could mean making a big sacrifice in The Umbrella Academy season 4.
However, the optics of killing the only main Black female character on the show, especially if it's to further the stories of her non-Black siblings, aren't great. It's more likely that Allison will need to work to fully repair her relationship with the Umbrella Academy's Hargreeves siblings, especially Viktor, but will live. This would be a more healing storyline for all.
Klaus Hargreeves
The Umbrella Academy season 4 revealed that thanks to his powers, Klaus is immortal. He has actually died dozens of times, sometimes without realizing it. Therefore, danger is second nature to Klaus by the end of the season, and his deaths don't mean much in terms of impacting the story and other characters. This would mean his death in The Umbrella Academy season 4 would be even more impactful. In the new universe, Klaus, like the rest of the characters, doesn't have his superpowers. He can't take all the risks he's used to and this could be his downfall. Klaus will almost certainly be near death once or twice in season 4, and it shouldn't be a surprise if he does kick the bucket for good.
Five Hargreeves
Next to Viktor, Five could be considered the main character of The Umbrella Academy. His return to his family in The Umbrella Academy season 1, episode 1, "We Only See Each Other at Weddings and Funerals" is a huge catalyst for the rest of the plot. As a 58-year-old stuck in a teenager's body, Five has lived a long life, albeit not a happy one. He spent decades in the apocalypse without his family or any humans at all and then worked for the Commission for several years. But he's shown that he would do anything to save his family and the rest of the world. Five struggled with adjusting to "normal" life in The Umbrella Academy season 3 and his one true love is a mannequin that he no longer has. Though a death scene from teenager Aidan Gallagher would be hard to watch, Five seems the most likely of the siblings to die in The Umbrella Academy season 4.
Viktor Hargreeves
If there is a single main character among the ensemble cast of The Umbrella Academy, it is undoubtedly Viktor Hargreeves, a.k.a. Number Seven. In The Umbrella Academy season 1, Viktor acts as the audience surrogate. He's an outsider, even to his own family, and thinks he doesn't have any powers. He discovers that not only can he control sound waves, but he is the reason for the apocalypse that the Umbrellas are trying to stop. Thankfully, Viktor hasn't ended the world yet, and by The Umbrella Academy season 4, he's developed a good relationship with his previously estranged siblings. In line with actor Elliot Page's transition, Viktor also comes out as transgender and has a few moments of genuine happiness, maybe for the first time ever. Viktor, more than any other main character, needs a happy ending. Similar to the situation with Allison, it would be bad optics to kill the show's one transgender character, but it would also be more cathartic than anything to see Viktor finally settle into something resembling a calm, content life.
Lila Pitts
Lila isn't a Hargreeves like the rest of the main characters, but she had her own superpowers thanks to the same mysterious event that resulted in their simultaneous births. As mentioned, Lila is pregnant, at least, she was before the universe reset, and ready to start a family with Diego. After Lila gives birth to her and Diego's child, she may be a bit closer to the chopping block, but Lila and Diego will almost certainly live through The Umbrella Academy season 4 and put their violent ways behind them.
Ben Hargreeves
Ben is a unique character among The Umbrella Academy main cast. In seasons 1 and 2, Ben Hargreeves (Number Six) was a ghost, only consistently visible to Klaus, who sacrifices himself to stop Viktor from causing an apocalypse. The circumstances of his original death at 16 years old are still a mystery, though were teased more heavily in The Umbrella Academy season 3 when the show introduced a new version of Ben. This Ben is the Sparrow Academy's Number Two, and not as nice as his alternate universe counterpart. He has the same tentacle powers and makes friends with Klaus, but he doesn't have a solid position in the family. It's possible the Sparrow Academy's Ben could die in The Umbrella Academy season 4, maybe to help his new family. He may even die in the same way as the original Ben. This would bring the two versions of the character full circle, and bring closure to the mystery of Ben's death.
Sir Reginald Hargreeves
Sir Reginald is dead in the original universe of The Umbrella Academy seasons 1 and 2, but flashbacks and dialogue show he wasn't the nicest adopted father to the Umbrellas. He's alive in The Umbrella Academy season 3, with the Sparrow Academy under his wing. Season 3 set him up as the show's ultimate villain, with the final shots showing him standing above a city plastered with his name, and his previously dead wife Abigail at his side. Most likely, Reggie will be who the Umbrellas and Sparrows have to defeat in season 4, so he probably won't make it out alive.
It is possible that all the remaining Umbrellas and Sparrows will live through The Umbrella Academy season 4, but any apocalypse comes with a few casualties. If the main characters survive, a few minor characters will probably be introduced in the final season just to die. Regardless, the final death of Sir Reginald Hargreeves in The Umbrella Academy season 4 is inevitable.
