Starring Adrien Brody, Laurence Fishburne, Alice Braga (Repo Men), Topher Grace, Danny Trejo, Derek Mears (Friday the 13th) and others, Predators is a reboot in which some of planet Earth’s most deadly killers are transported to a “game preserve” planet where they are hunted by tribes of Predators.
The film is being produced by Robert Rodriguez and directed by Nimród Antal (Armored, Vacancy) and the idea is to reintroduce audiences to the Predator mythology, while simultaneously cleaning the terrible taste of the Aliens vs. Predators series from the collective mouths of the movie going masses.
Since the first look look featurette premiered online, interest in Predators has been spiking. Thanks to our friends at Film School Rejects – who are currently at the SXSW festival – we now know some key details about Predators, which we’d like to share with you:
- Robert Rodriguez came up with the concept back in 1996 as a sequel of sorts. His original vision had Arnold Schwarzenegger returning as Dutch.
- Predators will be hard-R rated, and Fox is even pushing for an even gorier cut to release as an unrated DVD.
- There’s an anti-CGI mentality: like the original, the Predators in the film will be actors in costumes boasting great makeup effects.
- The movie will feature different tribes of Predators, some more fierce than others. There will also be “Predator animals” (See pics below).
Admittedly, I was on the fence about Predators up until now. However, after seeing the featurette, the concept art and reading over some details of the film, it seems to me like Rodriguez and Co., have the right mentality. And by “the right mentality” I of course mean love for the original film and not so much that sequel with Danny Glover and/or those knock-off AVP films.
Finally, unlike a lot of reboots/remakes/re-imaginings, the idea of taking the Predator premise and setting it on a Predator planet, is actually worth the time and cost of a feature film. Should be some bloody good fun.
