Shane Black’s Predator Reshoots Changed Much of the Third Act

Shane Black's The Predator has completed reshoots that changed much of the third act of the film. The project, originally slated to be released February 9, jumped to August before finally landing in September. While another new release date hasn't been announced, there's plenty of hype surrounding the film and its incredibly talented cast, even with the movie still months out from its debut.

Starring Alfie Allen, Boyd Holbrook, Edward James Olmos, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Munn, Sterling K. Brown, Thomas Jane, Trevante Rhodes, and Yvonne Strahovski, The Predator plot details are being kept under wraps. Director Shane Black has promised that a teaser will arrive in April but has urged fans to go into the sequel fresh, ready for a host of surprises involving their favorite alien and human hunting aliens. Full of stars effusive with praise, Black is clearly taking his time to make things perfect for excited fans.

That's very clear in the reshoots that, according to star Keegan-Micheal Key, rewrote most of the ending. The actor discussed the Canadian reshoots during a roundtable interview attended by CinemaBlend where the comedic star was full of praise for Black's rewrites. While some might seem confused about directions that the Predator franchise could go in, Key called Black "a wordsmith:"

We just finished (reshoots) last week, and just about three-quarters of the third act was rewritten. And Shane Black is... he's just a consummate professional, and a consummate writer. He's a wordsmith! It was a really, really exhilarating experience, and I think that he's still one of our most vibrant writers of cinema.

The film will have a unique tone and set according to Fox, taking place in a suburban setting as opposed to a mysterious jungle. The franchise has been in a sort of rut, focusing on soldiers-versus-aliens and only breaking new ground with Alien vs. Predator starring Sanaa Lathan. Fox is clearly backing Black's vision after giving their blessing to his reshoots. Everyone wants this to be a success.

The Predator sequel has a lot riding on it with the Fox-Disney merger on the horizon. Disney promised to take a hard look at Fox's non-Marvel franchises. The traditional family-friendly programming of Disney is a bit at odds with aliens who hunt for sport. If Disney is looking to trim any excess from their deal, they could see it as a bad investment if Black's film underperforms.

A creatively revitalized take on the franchise, however, could be just what it needs to inject new life into a beloved horror property and make it more attractive to Fox's new home studio. The idea of a family at the center of the action is the second draw. While Disney makes its final plans and the movie inches closer to production, however, fans can look forward to a great cast and a story that is clearly in the best of hands with people who want to take care with a well-loved property.
