The Predator has just received a rather striking new teaser motion poster. The original Predator is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary in 2017, and it’s become a sci-fi classic thanks to its fantastic dialogue, tense action sequences, and the iconic look of the title creature itself. The Predator franchise has been something of a mixed bag, however.
While Predator 2’s reputation has increased over the years, it underperformed compared to the original, with many disappointed that Arnold Schwarzenegger didn’t return. The film also teased Alien Vs Predator, a film which arrived fourteen years later in 2004. AvP was a solid hit, but the tame PG-13 rating and one-note characters were a major letdown, and the less said of its terrible sequel Requiem the better. 2010’s Predators proved to be an enjoyable action film, but it almost felt like a remake of the first movie and lacked the freshness that made it unique.
The Predator looks set to reinvent the franchise for a new generation and a teaser motion poster has been just been released, following the recent reveal of the film’s poster. The teaser features lightening striking a city, forming the unmistakable silhouette of the title hunter himself. This image may also be a nod to a scene from Predator 2 where lightning strikes while the alien is overlooking Los Angeles.
A synopsis for The Predator has yet to be released, though the film’s suburban setting was recently confirmed by Fox CEO Stacey Snider. Undoubtedly the most exciting element of the new film is the fact its helmed by Shane Black, screenwriter of Lethal Weapon and The Last Boy Scout, and director of Iron Man 3 and The Nice Guys. He also played ill-fated soldier Hawkins in Predator; who became the first onscreen victim of the creature.
Black has promised the new film will get fans of the franchise excited again, and it won’t just be a cash-in sequel. It seems the film will be acting as a reboot of sorts, though it will have some ties to previous movies. Black confirmed Jake Busey will be playing the son of Peter Keyes – who was played by his father Gary in Predator 2. The director also tried to lure Arnie back as Dutch for a cameo, but the actor declined the film, claiming the part was too small.
While the release date for The Predator has been shifted around a couple of times, Fox seems confident in their new sequel, so hopefully a trailer won’t be far off.
