News recently broke that Disney is planning a fifth Predator film that aims to reboot the 33-year-old franchise. While plot details are only rumored at this point, the film will be helmed by 10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg. The film will mark the latest Predator chapter since Shane Black's The Predator in 2018, which proved to be a massive box-office failure and a middling critical success.

As more information about the film seeps out, it's worth wondering which direction the new Predator film will go and whether or not faithful fans of the original will approve or disapprove.

Return To The Jungle (Wanted)

Predator Setting

One of the things that made John McTiernan's original Predator movie so vivid and visceral was the tropical Mexican jungle setting the movie was filmed in. In addition to the sheer beauty of the surroundings, the locale is what made the Predator's innate ability to camouflage so frighteningly thrilling.

Predators returned to a similar forest-like setting 23 years later, with far less effective results. The outdoor environment proved to be a manufactured hunting ground for the menacing alien-poachers to pick human beings off one by one.

Urban Setting (Unwanted)

If producers do choose to set the film away from the tropical jungle, one setting we hope it avoids at all costs is the urban metropolis. If Predator 2 taught the world anything, it's that an amphibiously mutated-monster does not belong in a place like South Central L.A.

Shane Black's The Predator also attempted to place the titular terror in a more modern, urban setting. The results also felt awkward and unnatural as the Predator battles in high-tech laboratories and gallops through city-streets. If Predator 5 doesn't take place in the jungle, then let's hope a new natural environment like the desert or the tundra is featured.

Past Timeline (Wanted)

In the week since Predator 5 was officially announced, rumors have swirled about a potential plotline that would serve as a sort of prequel. One report claims the film will be set in the past and involve a predominantly First Nations cast.

If these reports are true, then it's something we definitely welcome. The idea of pitting the Predator against Native Americans is a fantastic idea, and the notion of casting genuine actors to reflect such is even more inspired. Of course, these rumors have not been substantiated yet, if ever.

Villainous Crossovers (Unwanted)

AVP 2

One thing we absolutely hope Predator 5 avoids at all costs is some sort of gimmicky franchise crossover, a la Alien vs Predator. Not only are those films inferior to the standalone Predator canon, but they also do not belong.

The best way to restore abject horror into the franchise would be to focus on the Predators and their combative relationship with human beings, not some other extraterrestrial baddie.

Original Pedigree (Wanted)

While we know Dan Trachtenberg is poised to direct Predator 5, it would still be great if some of the original talents behind Predator were brought on board in some capacity. For example, original screenwriters Jim and John Thomas should, at the very least, serve as consultants on the film.

The Thomas brothers continued to watch their characters be appropriated in such fan-films as Hunter: Predator (2019) and Predator: Buck Fever (2020). Original Predator cinematographer Donald McAlpine should also be considered to reprise his role.

Multiple Predators (Unwanted)

The basic law of economics says that the more of something you have, the less valuable it is. The less of something you have, the more valuable it is. As such, one thing we hope Predator 5 stays away from is an overabundance of Predators.

One of the things that made the original film so thrilling and chilling was the fact it had one primary predatory villain for the cast to contend with. The power of the lone predator to waylay an entire army unit makes it far scarier than a watered-down legion of predators on the attack.

All-Female Cast (Wanted)

Annihilation Cast

One surefire way to inject an exciting new wrinkle into the Predator franchise would be to feature an all-female cast, a la Alex Garland's Annihilation or Gary Ross' Ocean's 8.

Ideally, the all-female cast would feature a diverse team of highly skilled soldier types to mirror the original film. Moreover, the sexual dynamic could foster a subplot involving the predator attempting to procreate with his female targets, which would be extremely terrifying.

Too Much CGI (Unwanted)

When the original Predator movie was produced, state of the art technology was employed by the late great Makeup & FX master Stan Winston. Aside from the Predator's infrared thermal-imaging POV and translucent camouflage effect, very little CGI was used.

In keeping with the original, here's hoping that there is not an over-reliance on computer-generated imagery in the film. To make the Predator as believable as possible, the tried and true method of placing a towering actor in a suit is the way to go.

Arnold Schwarzenegger (Wanted)

Arnold Schwarzenegger ready to fire in Predator 1987

If an all-female cast isn't featured and the story isn't sent in the past, then the number one thing we hope to see in Predator 5 is the return of Major "Dutch" Schaefer (Arnold Schwarzenegger).

One idea could be to have Dutch come out of hiding 30 years after his battle with the Predator and use his knowledge to help a young battalion of soldiers to fend off a new predatory assault. Another idea would be to cast Patrick Schwarzenegger as one of the younger soldiers, adding a meta, passing-the-torch narrative to the story.

PG-13 Rating (Unwanted)

Predator 1987b

Given the fact the new Predator movie is being produced by Disney, there is a real concern over the potential rating of the movie. Every Predator film to date has been R-rated, save for the loosely-related, PG-13-rated Alien Vs. Predator.

As such, the one thing every serious Predator fan does not want to see is a PG-13-rated fifth entry. Fans want more unbridled carnage and abject terror, not less, and a PG-13 rating would instantly sap the credibility that the franchise has worked for 33 years to build. Predator 5 should be Rated-R without equivocation.
