AMC's TV adaptation of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's seminal comic book series Preacher began production in May, and almost immediately thereafter, Seth Rogen (who is producing the show and co-directing the pilot with Evan Goldberg) shared our first silhouetted look at Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper) having a serious talk with poor Arseface (Ian Colletti).
Cooper and Colletti will be joined by Joseph Gilgun (Misfits) as the Irish punk-rock vampire Cassidy, Lucy Griffiths (Constantine) as Emily Woodrow (a character created for the show) and Ruth Negga (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) as Jesse's ex-girlfriend (and expert shot) Tulip O'Hare. Months after our first shadowy look at two principal characters, we now have an extensive batch of unofficial set photos from the pilot's New Mexico location.
Italian website Comicus posted a slew of pictures found on the Facebook page of Old Lamy Mission, which was built in 1924 along the Santa Fe border and evidently sat abandoned for decades... presumably until the crew of Preacher showed up. Click the link below to see the Preacher set photos.
These set photos give us a look at some of the cast and crew - notably Seth Rogen and our first look at two more main characters in costume: Joseph Gilgun in character as Cassidy (note him flipping off the camera) and Ian Colletti as Arseface, whose face was horribly disfigured after a failed suicide attempt via shotgun. The main cast and crew are also joined by a host of what are likely extras, since the location itself is probably doubling for the site of Preacher's inciting incident.
In the Preacher comic books, the story opens with God fleeing Heaven after a powerful entity known only as Genesis is born via the union of an angel and a demon and escapes confinement. Seeking a consciousness to bond with, Genesis rockets to Earth and finds Jesse Custer, a preacher in a Texas town. When the entity merges with Custer, the result is a violent explosion which levels Jesse's church and incinerates everyone in town.
Many of the set photos in the gallery depict the interior of the mission and the production design involved: pews, an altar, the stained glass windows. The exterior of the mission has not been restored as much (at least in these scenes), and the presence of Cassidy and Arseface suggest that the larger production location as a whole will double for several different places in the comic books.
None of these set photos appear to be officially sanctioned, but they have yet to be removed. Might we expect some official production stills to come our way? If so, expect them to shed more light on what's going at the Lamy Mission set - and when we can expect a good look at Dominic Cooper as Jesse and Ruth Negga as Tulip.
Preacher is expected to premiere on AMC in 2016.
