Preacher season 2 is going to feel a lot more like the comic, according to executive producer Sam Catlin. It's news that will come as a relief to many fans of the original comic book series, after Preacher season 1 did something very unexpected. In many ways, the first season acts as a prequel to the comics themselves, introducing the golden trio of Jesse (Dominic Cooper), Tulip (Ruth Negga), and Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun), but keeping them within the town limits of Annville for most of the season.

The season ended with these three finally getting on the road, which is where the comics begin, and from everything we've seen of season 2 so far, it's comparable to the early volumes of the comics -- with a few changes, of course. The trailer focuses heavily on the Saint of Killers, another character who was introduced in season 1, but who is newly come to Earth, while a new featurette promises more absurdity, comedy, and violence. Now, Catlin has confirmed that in addition to all that, the show will be sticking closer to the comic book story.

In an interview with MovieFone, Catlin talked about how the show will change, and how it will spend time on some of the shorter stories in the original books:

Preacher Season 2 Poster

"So what we want to do is we always want to make "Preacher" feel like "Preacher," and we delve a little deeper into some of these, what look like little pit stops on the road in the comic book become whole episodes, or several episodes, or stuff like that.

For this season, I won't say, but we were going to have like this season be two halves, and we were going to end up with one arc, and then move on to a whole other world for the second half. Then we kept pushing it off. It's like, "Well, maybe we can get to that world for the last four episodes." Then maybe just the last two.

Then we realized, there's so much story with this world that we're just with these characters that we're just bringing in, and we don't want to shortchange this other world that we're really excited about getting to. So yeah, it's exactly what you say: sometimes it's just a couple of issues in a comic book of places that Jesse winds up, but they're whole worlds for us on a TV show that we can really delve into."

There are certainly plenty of stories that the show could delve into, as the trio encounters a huge number of different personalities in the comic series. There are also plenty of other comic characters still to meet, especially Herr Starr and his cronies, and lots of backstory for the characters that has yet to be explored.

It certainly seems that the show is going full steam ahead for season 2, and now that audiences know the characters, it leaves plenty of room to just have fun with some of the action elements of the comics. Whether the show manages to turn around ratings and continue past this season or not, Preacher season 2 is going to be an incredible ride.

Preacher season 2 premieres Sunday, June 25 on AMC @10pm.
