What Preacher Season 2 Has In Store For Arseface

Ian Colletti opens up on where people can expect to find Eugene Root, also known as Arseface, come season 2 of Preacher. After being accidentally sent to Hell by the super-powered Jesse Custer played by Dominic Cooper, all eyes are focused on what the future lies for the Arseface character.

Following Preacher season 1 wrap-up, there was some commotion about whether Eugene will be back for the sophomore outing of the AMC series or not. It was first unconfirmed if the character survived the mini-apocalypse that left Odin Quincannon (Jackie Earle Haley), the Quincannon boys, Emily (Lucy Griffiths ) and the rest of the townsfolk dead. And as it turns out, as weird as it may sound, Jesse accidentally sending him to Hell is apparently the only reason he is still alive.

Unfortunately, Eugene's living set-up there is not as cozy as he might have hoped. While he is still alive and breathing, Eugene is still left on his own to meander in Hell. According to Colletti in an interview with EW, the place is filled with some pretty terrifying characters that Eugene has to deal with, if he still hopes to eventually come back in the world of the living:

“Hell’s a pretty scary place filled with some scary characters. I think Eugene — a pretty good and innocent person — is going to have to adapt to survive. In the first season, Eugene would come to Jesse with these feelings, and Jesse would often walk away, but in the second season, I think we’ll see more of a focus on Eugene himself, as he comes to grips with his own demons and realizes who he is.”

Relegating Eugene to Hell not only gives Preacher an entry point to further explore the territory, but also a chance to allow Eugene some character development. Referring to what Colletti pointed out about him being dependent on Jesse in season one, taking Eugene away from that attachment and putting him in a place where it's only him potentially against everyone else, could make for a strong narrative arc. This way, viewers become more invested in his journey and hopefully his triumphant return to the world of the living, as well.

Elsewhere in the series, fans can expect to find the lead trio of Jesse, Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) and Tulip (Ruth Nega) hit the road to meet new characters back on Earth (including God himself) which is similar to how Preacher's comic book counterpart starts. The three, however, will have to watch their backs carefully, as The Cowboy (Graham McTavish) is now on their tail.
