The Powers television series - based on the original comic book run by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming - is set to be Playstations first foray into original television programming. The series has been in the works for several years now, with it originally intended to air on FX back in 2009 - going as far as to shoot a pilot for the series - but failed to get picked up leading the series back into production with a new cast and pilot until it was picked up by Playstation.
The series is set to make its debut tomorrow on the Playstation Network, with the first episode being free for all users. Each episode that follows will be released on a weekly basis and will be available for individual purchase each week, but for Playstation Plus members, the entire season will be free with their yearly subscription package.
For those fans out there who might not have access to the Playstation Store right now though, Sony has released the first episode for the series online (see above) for all to watch ahead of its Playstation launch tomorrow, as well as a trailer teasing what to expect from the rest of the 10-episode season.
The show follows two police homicide detectives - Christian Walker (Sharlto Copley) and Deena Pilgrim (Susan Heyward) - who are members of the LA Powers Division and are tasked with investigating cases committed by super-powered beings. The thing is though, Walker himself was once a power, before he lost them in a tragic accident. For fans of the comics, they may be in for a bit of a different ride than the source material.
Bendis himself has talked about the differences between the comics and the television show saying, "the show and the books… almost run in parallel universes as they explore the same themes.” It becomes pretty clear though from the first few scenes of the episode alone that - like the comic books - this may be the most different and interesting comic book series or film for that matter, that audiences have seen yet.
Boasting an impressive cast along with Copley and Heyward including Eddie Izzard, Noah Taylor, and Michelle Forbes - Powers is executive produced by Bendis and Oeming and may end up being one of the breakout hits that television audiences see this year.
Powers will air on the Playstation Network beginning tomorrow, March 10th.
