The live-action TV reboot about the Powerpuff Girls is moving forward and has officially cast its three leading ladies. The series has long had name recognition thanks to Cartoon Network’s animated show The Powerpuff Girls, which ran from 1998 to 2005. It followed the The Powerpuff Girls — Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup — who were created by Professor Utonium and bestowed with a combination of “sugar, spice, and everything nice” personalities with a side of powerful abilities that turns them into kindergarten-aged superheroes thanks to the Chemical X ingredient.

The Powerpuff Girls is the first attempt at a live-action television show that is based on the original animated series. There have been other media centering the The Powerpuff Girls, including 2002’s The Powerpuff Girls Movie and the 2016 animated reboot of the series that aired three seasons from 2016 through 2019. The upcoming live-action reboot will not involve Craig McCracken, the creator of The Powerpuff Girls. That said, McCracken told SyFy Wire that he’s “curious to see what [The CW] do with it.”

Now that a pilot of the new show has been ordered, what exactly can fans expect from The Powerpuff Girls? Here’s everything to know about the live-action reboot, including the cast, story details, and release date.

The Powerpuff Girls Live-Action Reboot Is Coming To The CW

The CW ordered a pilot for The Powerpuff Girls in February 2021, though the series was first announced as being in development in August of last year. The live-action adaptation is one of three pilot orders The CW gave the greenlight to, the other two being Naomi, the DC series from Ava DuVernay and Jill Blankenship, and a currently untitled dramedy. The Powerpuff Girls pilot is being executive produced by Diablo Cody (Jennifer's Body) and Heather Regnier, who will also serve as writers.

The Powerpuff Girls Live-Action Reboot Cast

The live-action The Powerpuff Girls has found its titular stars. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Chloe Bennet has been cast to play Blossom, Descendants’ Dove Cameron (who also recurred in a season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) will take on the role of Bubbles, and singer-songwriter Yana Perrault will play Buttercup.

The Powerpuff Girls Live-Action Reboot Story Details

While the animated series was focused on The Powerpuff Girls as kids, the live-action reboot will see the superheroes as cynical women in their 20s now contending with their vigilante childhoods. The crime-fighting superheroes are no more and a whole lot more subdued. Blossom is described as spunky with several advanced degrees, but whose childhood has left her with a lot of baggage and anxiousness that she must grapple with and face.

Bubbles is no longer as charming as she once was and is more interested in recapturing the magic of a life lived in the spotlight. Meanwhile, the once rebellious Buttercup is hiding a sensitive side and opts to live her life without the public recognition she once had as a member of The Powerpuff Girls. Naturally, the trio will have to reunite to save the world from an as-yet-unknown catastrophe that will hopefully bring them back together.

The Powerpuff Girls doesn’t yet have an official release date and is only at the pilot stage right now. However, if all goes well and The CW gives the live-action a series order, then fans should expect The Powerpuff Girls to debut in the fall of 2021 at the earliest. It’s also possible The CW will set the show to premiere during midseason 2022, but only time will tell for now.
