In a preview for Boom! Studios' upcoming issue of Mighty Morphin, it's revealed that the Power Rangersleader Zordon was able to change his appearance and shape-shift at will. As a former Guardian on his homeworld of Eltar, Zordon was called on a variety of missions to keep the universe safe, and one saw Zordon and his fellow Guardians secretly visiting new worlds, disguised as other species in order to study them before revealing themselves. In doing so, the Guardians of the past were almost like a more altruistic version of Marvel Comics' shapeshifting alien race known as the Skrulls.

Mighty Morphin is a fairly new title from Boom! Studios in name alone, as it still serves as a continuation of the narrative being told by writer Ryan Parrott, though it's now just focused solely on the first team of Rangers. Originally, the series was titled Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, and also featured tales from the Omega Rangers. Now, the Omega Rangers have their own focused title as well (simply named Power Rangers). Naturally, the big benefit is that both series now get more time to better flesh out the evolution of their respective teams and narratives. For example, a big focus for Mighty Morphin has been revealing new elements and secrets from Zordon's past. Apparently, he wasn't always a giant blue head and once belonged to a group of proto-Rangers known as the Guardians of Eltar.

As a result, the new preview for Mighty Morphin #3 continues Zordon's origins from Parrott with artwork from Marco Renna. 10,000 years ago, Zordon went on one of his first missions known as a supervision with his mentor and friend Zartus. During a supervision, the Guardians take the form of a planet's dominant species, studying the people and culture before ultimately revealing themselves to the world as protectors. Here are the preview pages and synopsis for the upcoming issue from Boom! Studios:

  • MIGHTY MORPHIN #3
  • (W) Ryan Parrott (A) Marco Renna (CA) In-Hyuk Lee
  • Two New Series. Two New Teams. The UNLIMITED POWER ERA continues with a shocking betrayal by a member of the Mighty Morphin team...
  • ...but WHY?
  • With the Mighty Morphin team in disarray, Lord Zedd makes his deadliest attack yet - and no one is ready for what he's got planned!

While the synopsis is much more focused on the current events of the series and the Power Rangers dealing with a betrayal among their ranks, the preview pages are much more focused on Zordon's past and undercover mission. As previously mentioned, the Guardians act like Marvel Comics Skrulls, albeit with kinder and better intentions. While Skrulls would use their shape-shifting abilities to secretly infiltrate and conquer planets from within to expand their empire, the Guardians of Eltar use their shape-shifting power to learn as much as they can about a world for the express purpose of finding the best to help them once they eventually reveal themselves as heroes and defenders.

In any case, it seems as though there's plenty of action ahead for the Power Rangers. As Mighty Morphin' continues its trend of revealing Zordon's mysterious origins issue by issue, it's becoming more and more clear that his past on Eltar will begin to affect the present team of Rangers as the series continues from Boom! Studios.
