The new Power Rangers show, Power Rangers Cosmic Fury, is already different from previous Power Rangers seasons in one great way. While Power Rangers Cosmic Fury is a new Power Rangers series, it will revisit the Power Rangers Dino Fury characters by building off of Dino Fury season 2’s ending cliffhanger. The Power Rangers are heading to space after learning of Lord Zedd’s return, yet the nostalgic Mighty Morphin Power Rangers villain is not the most exciting thing about the new series.

The Power Rangers franchise turns 30 in 2023, something that will be celebrated not only with a new Power Rangers show but also with a Mighty Morphin Power Rangers reunion – Power Rangers: Once & Always. Whereas the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers reunion is set to celebrate the franchise's origins, Cosmic Fury is looking into Power Rangers’ future.

How Power Rangers' Format Changes Can Help Its Story

Power Rangers' Lord Zedd and the Red Cosmic Fury Power Ranger

Power Rangers Cosmic Fury is ditching the “monster of the week format” which is great news not only for the show but also for the franchise as a whole. Cosmic Fury could be a season of transition, as it will still be based on a Super Sentai show for the zord fights while featuring all-original Power Rangers suits and telling an original story. A new Power Rangers universe in which the shows will not be based on the Super Sentai series is currently in development at Hasbro with showrunner Jenny Klein, meaning that Cosmic Fury could be the first hint of what this new approach to Power Rangers will be.

It is rare for a Power Rangers TV show to have an overarching story or plotline that last more than just a couple of episodes. Apart from some key episodes like Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ "Green with Evil" or Power Rangers In Space’s "Countdown to the Destruction", most Power Rangers episodes are self-contained, 20-minute-long adventures that do not really inform the next one. That is something Power Rangers Dino Fury season 2 started to change, although it still followed a monster-of-the-week approach for the most part. A 10-episode season with no fillers, Power Rangers Cosmic Fury will be able to dive into its cosmic plotline without any deviations.

Why Power Rangers' Format Change Is Good For Its Characters

Power Rangers Cosmic Fury cast characters

One of Power Rangers Dino Fury’s biggest strengths was its characters, all of which are returning for Cosmic Fury. Between the mysteries of Zyon and Aiyon’s home planet Rafkon and the truth about Amelia, who will now become Power Rangers Cosmic Fury's Red Ranger, Dino Fury was at its best when it focused on the characters. Moments like Javi deciding to pursue his music career or Izzy telling her girlfriend that she was the Green Ranger made Dino Fury one of the best Power Rangers shows since Mighty Morphin, something that Cosmic Fury can emulate on a bigger scale as it won't have fillers.

By ditching the monster of the week Power Rangers trope, Power Rangers Cosmic Fury can dedicate most of its runtime to the Cosmic Fury Rangers and their great chemistry. Cosmic Fury will be the first Power Rangers season since Power Rangers Lost Galaxy to go to space, which can also benefit the Rangers as they will necessarily be the focus of the story. Though Power Rangers Dino Fury has a great set of supporting characters that should return for Power Rangers' new show Cosmic Fury, a more streamlined season with an overarching arc is a great next step for Power Rangers.
