Power Rangers’ new Red Ranger for Cosmic Fury breaks one of the series’ oldest Zord tropes. A sequel to Power Rangers Dino Fury that is also expected to be a celebration of the Power Rangers universe, Cosmic Fury has the difficult mission of being the series that will premier during Power Rangers’ 30th anniversary. Despite the returning Power Rangers cast, Cosmic Fury is set to be a lot different from Dino Fury.

The first complete set of Power Rangers to return for three seasons in a row, the Dino Fury Power Rangers are breaking a Mighty Morphin record in a very special year for the franchise. In terms of the story, Cosmic Fury is expected to pick up from where Dino Fury season 2 left off. That said, the next Power Rangers show is shaking up the series’ power levels with new Ranger forms, weapons, and Zords.

Cosmic Fury’s Red Ranger Amelia’s Main Zord Is Not A T. Rex

The Red Rangers in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Dino Charge, Dino Thunder, and Cosmic Fury

Unlike all previous dinosaur-related Power Rangers shows, Power Rangers Cosmic Fury’s Red Ranger Amelia’s main Zord is not a Tyrannosaurus. While Cosmic Fury does not carry the word “Dino” in the title, the upcoming Power Rangers season works as a continuation of Dino Fury and will still involve the Dino Fury powers. This can be noticed by the fact that the new Power Rangers suits, more specifically the helmets, are still designed after the dino Zords from Dino Fury. Amelia, the current Pink Ranger who will become Power Rangers Cosmic Fury’s Red Ranger, had an Ankylosaurus as her initial main Zord.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ Jason, Dino Thunder’s Conner, Dino Charge’s Tyler, and Dino Fury’s Zayto all had a T. rex-like creature as their initial main Zord in their respective Power Rangers series. Given how iconic the tyrannosaurus is when it comes to dinosaurs in pop culture, it always made sense for the Red Ranger’s main Zord to be a T. rex. The only reason why that Power Rangers trope is changing is that Cosmic Fury will be a sequel to Dino Fury, meaning that the current Pink Ranger Amelia already has her own Zord. How exactly Amelia becomes the Red Ranger in Cosmic Fury remains a mystery.

Will The Power Rangers Get New Zords In Cosmic Fury?

The Power Rangers Cosmic Fury suits, although very different from previous Power Rangers suits, are keeping the same helmet designs used in Dino Fury. In other words, the Dino Fury Rangers’ original Zords will continue to be referenced in their suits, which leads to the unique scenario of a Red Ranger whose respective dinosaur is not a T. rex. That said, the Power Rangers will get new Zords in Cosmic Fury. While the Cosmic Fury suits were created for the show, the next entry in the Power Rangers universe is still based on a Super Sentai series – Uchu Sentai Kyuranger. Now chasing Lord Zedd in space, the Rangers will need new powers.

Given how many potential Rangers and Zords there are in Kyuranger, there is no shortage of possibilities for how many new Zords the Power Rangers can have in Cosmic Fury. One of the recent Super Sentai series with the most main characters, Kyuranger is a challenging season to be adapted into a Power Rangers TV show, yet it also allows Cosmic Fury to have several Zord fights. It will be interesting to see how Cosmic Fury incorporates the new Zords and weapons, especially because Power Rangers Dino Fury season 2’s finale ended with the Rangers still using their original dino powers.
