Power Rangers is heading back to space after 24 years with Power Rangers Cosmic Fury, a new series that is expected to be very different from recent releases. Cosmic Fury will be a sequel to the latest Power Rangers TV show, Dino Fury, with the full set of Dino Fury Rangers returning. Cosmic Fury will also be the first Power Rangers season to take place mostly in space since 1999’s Power Rangers Lost Galaxy.

The Power Rangers franchise went to space for the first time in 1998 with Power Rangers in Space, the Power Rangers TV show that wrapped up the Zordon Era. Power Rangers continued with the space setting in Lost Galaxy, in which the Rangers operated from the Terra Venture station. After more than two decades, it is time to "set controls to outer space" again, and the move could have a far-reaching impact.

What Cosmic Fury's Space Setting Means For Power Rangers' New Story

Power Rangers Dino Fury season 2 saw the Rangers in Rafkon for a couple of episodes, yet most of the show was set on Earth. With the destruction of Rafkon and the threat of the Sporix finally resolved, it seemed like there was no reason for the Power Rangers to return to space. However, during Dino Fury season 2’s finale, Red Ranger Zayto returned to warn his team that Lord Zedd, the classic Power Rangers villain, had yet to be captured. Lord Zedd is set to be Cosmic Fury’s main villain, and it is now up for the Power Rangers to track down the Emperor of Evil across the universe.

Power Rangers Dino Fury’s story was informed by cosmic events for the most part. The Power Rangers’ morphers and Zords originated from another planet, Rafkon, which was also the home planet of two of the team’s members. In addition, future Red Ranger Amelia was revealed to be the daughter of the now-reformed Rafkonian Power Rangers villains Void Knight and Void Queen. Still, Dino Fury’s story was close to the classic Earth-based Power Rangers adventures, with the characters going to school and to work. Cosmic Fury’s space setting means that the Rangers will have to put their civilian lives aside to focus on locating and stopping Lord Zedd – a dramatic context for the series.

Power Rangers Cosmic Fury's Space Setting Means Less Filler

The Dino Fury Power Rangers in season 2

It is no coincidence that Power Rangers in Space and Power Rangers Lost Galaxy, both of which took place outside of Earth, are among the best Power Rangers shows of all time. The fact that the Powers Rangers were away from home for most of those shows raised the stakes for their adventures, as they could only count on each other and on the Power to protect them from the usual Power Rangers villains. With the Rangers away from Earth, which means they were separated from supporting and comedy relief characters, both in Space and Lost Galaxy had fewer filler episodes compared to Mighty Morphin or Zeo.

Something similar is now expected to happen in Power Rangers Cosmic Fury. In fact, Cosmic Fury won’t be a monster of the week season, which is a first in Power Rangers history. With just 10 episodes and the Power Rangers presumably away from home for most of the show to fight Lord Zedd, Cosmic Fury will not have the time for one-episode-long subplots or comedy relief moments that have nothing to do with the Power Rangers. That is not to say Cosmic Fury should completely abandon the Rangers' civilian lives and their personal storylines, as those actually made Dino Fury one of the strongest Power Rangers seasons in years. However, the potential is there for a new and exciting approach.
