Power Rangers is ditching the franchise’s oldest trope ahead of the new Power Rangers series Cosmic Fury, and it could not be better news for the franchise. A landmark for the Power Rangers universe, Power Rangers Cosmic Fury is set to arrive in 2023 as part of the celebration of Power Rangers' 30th Anniversary. Despite being the 30th Power Rangers season, Cosmic Fury will be different from all previous Power Rangers shows.

Power Rangers Cosmic Fury will continue the story of Power Rangers Dino Fury, with the Dino Fury cast returning. This will be the first time a Power Rangers cast returns for three seasons in a row, as even the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers cast changed throughout the years. However, the returning Power Rangers cast is not the only “franchise first” for Cosmic Fury.

Power Rangers Cosmic Fury Thankfully Won’t Be A “Monster Of The Week” Show

The Cosmic Fury Power Rangers and a Dino Fury villain

As confirmed by Power Rangers Cosmic Fury showrunner Simon Bennett (via Hasbro Pulse), the next Power Rangers series will tell a long-form story spread across 10 episodes and will have no fillers. In other words, Cosmic Fury will not be a “monster of the week” season – a first for the Power Rangers universe. From Mighty Morphin Power Rangers to Dino Fury, the Power Rangers seasons usually have 22 episodes in which most of the lore continuity only really happens in key episodes. Though the “monster of the week” trope is part of the Power Rangers universe’s charm, a more elaborate narrative is a welcome change.

Power Rangers has had multiple different eras, yet the overall formula of adapting a Super Sentai and always repeating certain story beats had previously remained unchanged, meaning that the fights before the Power Rangers morph and the final Megazord fights were reliably present. Dino Fury season 2 had been already been slightly different from that formula, and now Power Rangers Cosmic Fury is set to be unlike anything in the Power Rangers universe. For a franchise that is celebrating its 30th anniversary, Power Rangers needs something unique like Cosmic Fury. Between the no-fillers approach and the new Red Ranger, Power Rangers Cosmic Fury couldn’t be more exciting.

Cosmic Fury Shows How Power Rangers Is Changing

While Cosmic Fury is technically a Dino Fury sequel, the next Power Rangers season may be looking more towards the future of the Power Rangers franchise. The next Power Rangers season after Cosmic Fury has yet to be revealed, but a new Power Rangers universe is being crafted by Hasbro and showrunner Jenny Klein. Unlike all previous Power Rangers shows, these upcoming projects are expected to be all-original stories, and not based on any Super Sentai. Though Cosmic Fury is based on Uchu Sentai Kyuranger for the zord fights, the Dino Fury sequel will have an original story and all-original suits.

The future of the Power Rangers shared universe is very exciting, as Power Rangers will now get to deliver something different from what audiences have seen in the past 30 years. The Super Sentai adaptations have always made for some incredible moments, yet the chance of not limiting the next Power Rangers to what the Super Sentai series have done is promising. A 10-episode, story-focused Power Rangers show with no fillers like Cosmic Fury will be something unique both for those who have watched all Power Rangers seasons and for those who may only be familiar with classics like Mighty Morphin, which makes it even more interesting.
