The Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase has revealed that the Portal: Companion Collection will release later today, June 28, on Nintendo Switch. The Portal: Companion Collection was revealed during the February 2022 Nintendo Direct, though it only had a loose 2022 release window at that time.

Portal: Companion Collection brings Portal and Portal 2 to Nintendo systems for the first time. The original Portal is a highly-acclaimed first-person puzzle game, where the protagonist must escape from a science facility that is being controlled by the sadistic GLaDOS. The only tool the player has at their disposal is the Portal Gun, which creates two portals on stable surfaces, allowing them to bypass hazards. Portal 2 involves the player being trapped by GLaDOS once more, where they must survive her deadly games, as well as the machinations of a new AI, known as Wheatley. Portal 2 also added a co-op campaign, forcing two players to think with portals.

Nintendo will often shadowdrop a big game during one of its Direct presentations, and this time, it was Portal: Companion Collection that was given the surprise release date. Portal: Companion Collection will be available on the Nintendo eShop later today. The Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase can be seen below on the official Nintendo YouTube channel.

The official page for Portal: Companion Collection on the Nintendo Switch eShop has also revealed that the multiplayer campaign in Portal 2 can be played locally, with split-screen, or online. Players of the game will need a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to use the online multiplayer. It's currently unclear whether the Portal: Companion Collection will have the DLC content from either game, but fans won't have to wait long to find out for sure.

The Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase might not have had the amazing first-party reveals that fans expect from Directs, and the big announcement of the Persona games coming to Nintendo Switch was slightly diluted by the earlier reveal that they're coming to PlayStation and Xbox systems, but the show did have a few exciting reveals. The fact that the Portal games will soon be available on Nintendo systems for the first time is a big announcement, especially as they have only received console ports during the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 generation, and are not easy to play on modern systems. The Portal games are among Valve's best titles, and Nintendo fans will finally have a chance to experience the horror of being in GLaDOS' grasp in the Portal: Companion Collection.
