Like the Five Nights at Freddy's series, Poppy Playtime tasks players with avoiding bloodthirsty animated creatures in a typically child-friendly setting. The indie title takes players to the Playtime Co. factory, which was abandoned ten years before the game's events after its entire staff mysteriously vanished. Players freely explore the factory from a first-person perspective, making it similar to Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach rather than earlier entries in the iconic franchise. While exploring the factory players encounter Huggy Wuggy, a massive stuffed doll with spindly limps and razor-sharp teeth. Comparisons between Poppy Playtime and FNAF have been frequent, though the MOB Games title has managed to stand out thanks to its GrabPack puzzle mechanic.
As a follow-up to Poppy Playtime's first chapter, developer MOB Games has released a trailer for Poppy Playtime: Chapter 2 on YouTube. The second entry in the survival horror saga teases the return of Huggy Wuggy and the GrabPack, but new mechanics are also shown. A new green GrabPack attachment appears to play a large role, though its exact functionality is a mystery. The most disturbing part of the trailer, by far, is the reveal of a monstrous new foe for players to avoid. The pink creature has a cheerful face and gentle voice, but its grotesquely long limbs will allow it to easily traverse vents when it inevitably attacks the player in Poppy Playtime: Chapter 2.
Poppy Playtime is a deeply unsettling survival horror experience, and the game's vague plot only adds to the tension. MOB Games has kept what happened to the Poppy Playtime factory staff unclear, though it seems likely that this mystery will be explored further in Chapter 2. The entire Playtime Co. staff is said to have disappeared ten years before the start of the first chapter, though the VHS message seems to suggest that the employees are somehow still alive within the nightmarish factory.
The first chapter of Poppy Playtime seems to have left a mark on survival horror fans, and Chapter 2 looks introduce an even more disturbing collection of creatures. The stretchy-limbed being seen at the end of the trailer is particularly terrifying, mixing bright and cheerful character design with intensely threatening movement. While its release date is still unannounced, players would be wise not to toy around with Poppy Playtime: Chapter 2.
