Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet have brought a new, open-world experience to the realm of Pokémon. With 18 total challenges, one for each type, and plenty of new characters, the game is topped off with some fantastic new legendary Pokémon

While there are some great new legendaries, there are also sadly many left behind by the new generation. However, for those missing those roles on their new teams, there are some Pokémon that can approximate what those old legendaries could do. Since every Pokémon is unique, it won't be a perfect match, but they might fill the hole left behind in team building.

Chien-Pao: Galarian Zapdos

Chien-Pao from Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

Galarian Zapdos was a Pokémon that could rip through powerful teams with its great STAB attacks and high offensive stats. Additionally, thanks to decent bulk, it didn't worry about getting hit once or twice, and it didn't fear abilities like Intimidate thanks to its own ability: Defiant.

Chien-Pao excels at almost everything that Galarian Zapdos did, albeit with a different set of STAB moves. With a Choice Band, Chien Pao can rip through most opposing Pokémon regardless of type. Furthermore, its ability reduces the Defense of its opponent, meaning that, much like Galarian Zapdos, a single Intimidate won't be enough to stop Chien-Pao from sweeping.

Orthworm: Registeel

Orthworm in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

Being the best defensive typing in the game, a Steel with great defense can be a powerful tank for any team. Regigigas fit this role nicely, while also adding some utility and offensive pressure.

Orthworm may not have Registeel's Special Defense, but it does almost everything else that Registeel wanted to. It possesses Stealth Rock and Body Press to combine utility and damage output. It can even approximate Registeel's popular Curse set. While the lack of high Special Defense is a bummer, Orthworm makes up for it with the move Shed Tail and a great defensive ability in Earth Eater, making it one of Scarlet & Violet's best monotype Pokémon.

Quaquaval: Urshifu - Rapid Strike

Quaquaval in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

Urshifu's rapid strike from is a Water/Fighting physical attacker than can tear through teams with its signature move. It could successfully use multiple sets, but it shined with either a Choice Band set or, occasionally, a bulkier set that utilized Bulk Up.

Quaquaval is one of the best gen 9 starter forms and matches Urshifu's Water/Fighting typing. Quaquaval is similar to Urshifu in its offensive utility, and both shine with their own unique signature moves. While Urshifu relied on Surging Strikes to get KOs, Quaquaval's Aqua Step can completely sweep teams after a few uses. Just like Urshifu, Quaquaval's Bulk Up set and Choice Band set can both tear through opponents.

Garganacl: Regirock

Garganacl's pokedex entry in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Regirock is a Rock-type defensive tank that makes use of both its utility and powerful Body Press's to be useful. Sadly, it isn't quite as powerful as its cousins, Regieleki and Registeel.

Garganacl is one of the few examples of a Pokémon that completely surpasses the legendary that it replaces. It may not have Regirock's same defensive stats, but it has a fantastic combination of signature ability and signature move that make it surpass almost all other mono-Rock Pokémon. Thanks to its signature move, Garganacl can take care of threatening Steel types the same way that Regirock could with Body Press, but Garganacl can also get the jump on Water and Ghost types.

Kilowattrel: Zapdos

Despite being one of the oldest Pokémon in the game, Zapdos constantly finds a way to remain powerful. It can function as a defensive tank on any team, but it is especially lethal as a sweeper on rain teams.

Kilowattrel, another Electric/Flying type, can't hope to match Zapdos as a tank. Instead, the place where Kilowattrel finds comparisons to Zapdos is as a rain team sweeper. Access to STAB Thunder and Hurricane is fantastic, and Kilowattrel also learns the powerful Weather Ball. Changing to a Water type both makes use of Weather Ball and its Volt Absorb ability, effectively giving it 3 very powerful STABs and only one weakness in the rain.

Baxcalibur: Kyurem

Baxcalibur in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet

Kyurem may have been the weakest of its legendary trio, but it was still a powerhouse Pokémon that functions well as either a special or physical attacker. One of its most powerful sets was its famous Dragon Dance set.

Baxcalibur's outrageous attack and average speed give it the same style as the physically attacking Kyurem set. While it can never replicate the especially offensive Kyurem with Freeze Dry, Baxcalibur is more than capable of fulfilling a similar role to the Dragon Dance version of its Dragon/Ice counterpart. It isn't quite as powerful as Kyurem due to its lack of versatility, but their most powerful sets are certainly similar.

Iron Treads: Cobalion

Iron Tusk in Pokemon Violet

Cobalion is a Steel/Fighting powerhouse that threatens a wide variety of different Pokémon thanks to a combination of great offensive types and solid coverage. Still, it's found itself to be among the lower tiers of the four musketeer series.

Just like Cobalion, Iron Treads is a powerful, physical Steel with a similar speed tier. A Steel-type that can threaten other Steels is always a fun archetype to have, and Cobalion and Iron Treads can both-handedly defeat the infamous Steel trapper Magnezone. They both also have access to Stealth Rock, meaning they can offer their team support after the Pokémon that they offensively threaten switches out.

Great Tusk: Terrakion

Terrakion stands out as arguably the second-best of the musketeers. The Rock/Fighting powerhouse can fulfill a wide variety of roles with a wide variety of items, making it as unpredictable as it is powerful.

Great Tusk doesn't quite have Terrakion's versatility, but it does have its offensive potential. While it's a Ground/Fighting rather than a Rock/Fighting legendary, it can check the same type of Pokémon that Terrakion does. This is partially due to Great Tusk's access to both Stone Edge and Rock Slide, giving it a similar style in both single and double battles. With this combined, Great Tusk has proven to be one of the most overpowered Pokémon of its generation.

Koraidon: Groudon

With generation 3 came two of the most game-defining abilities to ever be released: Drought and Drizzle. The abilities, which could completely change the scope of a battle, were attached to the monstrous Groudon and Kyogre.

Over a decade later, an ability that's even stronger than Drought was released: Orichalcum Pulse. The ability summons sun, just like Drought, but also raises Koraidon's attack. Koraidon has the physically attacking prowess of Groudon, with far more coverage and speed. Overall, while it may not compete with Primal Groudon, Koraidon is more than a match for the original and is one of the best dual-type Pokémon in Scarlet & Violet.

Miraidon: Kyogre

A character riding Miraidon in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

From the moment it was released, Kyogre defined the game more than any other Pokémon in history. Thanks to changing the battlefield to its will, having its STAB Water Spout increased even further by its own rain, and supporting its Steel-type allies by crippling common Fire moves, Kyogre warped every battle it was in.

While Miraidon's Hadron Engine may summon Electric Terrain rather than rain, the effect on the game that it has is more similar to Kyogre's oppressive rule than Miraidon's fellow Electric Terrain setter in Tapu Koko. Not only does Hadron Engine raise Miraidon's Special Attack, but the Electric Terrain boosts its signature move, Electro Drift, to the levels of a Kyogre's infamous Water Spout.
