The Pokémon Company, Nintendo, and Game Freak have entered the gaming market once more with the release of the newest Pokémon titles, Scarlet and Violet. While the games are already exciting audiences for the innovation, narrative, and stunning animation, there are those fans who question the latest generation of Pokédex, besides the technical errors.

More specifically, there are some on Reddit who have been sharing their unpopular opinions concerning the Gen 9 Pokémon and the design choices that Game Freak have made surrounding their gameplay, visual style, and general concept. These Pokémon are supposedly disappointing additions to the universe.

Palafin

Palafin isn't a bad design on the face of it. But when players look at how it evolved, there is something peculiar about the choice here. Palafin is a dolphin-like Pokémon that has evolved from Finizen. It's a complicated process that requires Finizen to be level 38 and included multiplayer.

But the connection between the two feels limited. StridentHawk has said, "Also look, I think the dolphin evo looks DUMB and I consider it one of the ugliest designs in the gen." That's a harsh statement, but there is an argument to be made that the visual development is a big leap between the two.

Flamigo

While there were plenty of Pokémon that fans wanted to see a return in Gen 9, no one would have expected the creation of Flamigo, nor would many perhaps assume that the design would return in the future. There is a clear criticism to be made here. It's not very imaginative.

FinancialTip3197 touched on the subject further saying, "There was very little creativity... A flamingo. Just a regular looking flamingo." There lies the problem, that the Flamigo, despite it being a fun additional, does feel more like a real-world animal than a Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet.

Paldeon Tauros

Region-specific Pokémon have become more popular throughout each successive title. It's an intelligent way to fill the Pokédex, with previous designs coming back in new ways. However, despite how cute or strong they may look, they can be disappointing additions.

One user, BangaiiWatchman said, "Paldean Taurus is literally just regular Taurus painted black." It's easy to see why they may feel this way, with the original concept perhaps being recycled to fill a space in the game, but some enjoy the notion that there are variations to familiar faces.

Tinkaton

One criticism that has been levied at Game Freak is that they may have copied design elements from other similar video games. Of course, many of those franchises have taken the concept that Pokémon developed and made them their own. But Tinkaton might be an example of Pokémon doing the same.

Miserable-Sale-783 explored this in further detail and said, "I can see for this generation it look like they were taking inspiration from other sources hence why we got a Pokémon with a hammer (Digimon)." There are comparisons to be made, which might make Tinkaton a disappointing reveal.

Spidops

Whatever the look of a Pokémon is, they are designed to contribute something in battle, so that they can become one of the most vital tournament winners in the franchise. But the concept of strength can move a concept away from what fans have come to expect.

kipokocat explored the idea by saying, "haven't seen anyone else say this so it might just be me, but a bunch of Gen 9 don't even look like Pokémon to me. Something about the art style of ones like Spidops... just feel very out of place." It's a valid response, with some disappointed by the overall feel of this generation cohesively.

Revavroom

Revavroom is such an interesting example in the Scarlet and Violet landscape. To continue to innovate, Nintendo has turned to real-world objects to inspire their creations. That can go from everything from a lamp to, in this case, a vehicle like a car. It's a little bizarre.

Vrikhka noted that "By far the ugliest, and just plain dull designs. I don't get what is the obsession with cars as well. I'm at awe of who approve these designs at gamefreak and honestly said...OMG! These look awesome!" It's a very firm analysis of this design, but one that does bring into question where the disappointing ideas might come from.

Dudunsparce

The Dunsparce is an iconic addition to the Pokémon saga and has certainly survived the test of time. If something isn't broken there isn't any need to fix it, but Scarlet and Violet have revisited some older Pokémon like this and made some rather unpopular changes.

Decamitized voiced a lot of disappointment with the choice of evolution here by saying, "I don’t care how many Pokémon were created, I want good ones. I mean- Dudunsparce? We were all waiting for an amazing evolution. We got something terrible." The reality is, Game Freak simply added a few extra sections to the Pokémon to redefine it.

Pawmi

There has been a trend toward creating Pokémon that reminds fans of a different iteration from the past. That cannot be more true of Pikachu, who has become the official mascot for the brand and has been copied in a variety of different ways, perhaps even in Gen 9.

Feeling-Expert-83 stated that, "I agree, awful designs. Also why does the new orange Pikachu clone have 2 evolutions and looks the same?" The idea that Pawmi and its evolutions all look very similar does suggest that spots in the Pokédex are just being easily filled.

Sprigatito

Sprigatito is a starter Pokémon and as a trio, they will be discussed in further detail. But there is a wider conversation to be had about how cat Pokémon have been disappointing in the past and that is the case again for many in Scarlet and Violet.

superyoshiom said, "I'll never understand of GF consistently has neat cat Pokemon that could end up becoming some sort of cool tiger or smilodon final evo but always screw it up." They often make the designs anthropomorphic which takes away from the cat-like imagery that many might be looking for.

The Starters

Starters are always going to be up for debate. For the most part, the new generation of Scarlet and Violet have been welcomed with open arms from the fan community, but some are not too happy with how Gen 9 has taken to the designs of these important Pokémon.

Thorn2800 said, "I agree that the starters are arguably the worst yet." It's a really harsh statement that many would likely craft further discourse around, as there are a few imaginative features for these Pokémon that set them apart from previous choices.
