The Pokémon World Championships are back and this year Pokémon UNITE will be included in the games players can compete in. After both the 2020 and 2021 Pokémon World Championships were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, players are likely excited to be back competing in person.

Pokémon UNITE is a popular free-to-play online multiplayer game for the Nintendo Switch or mobile devices. Players are free to roam the arena and challenge real opponents and wild AI Pokémon that appear in the arena. The more opponents a player defeats the more Aeos Energy they collect. Once the Aeos Energy is collected, the player can deposit it into the opponent's goal for points. At the end of a round, whichever team has the most points accrued wins. Players are able to join their friends in battle and take on other teams, which makes it the perfect fit for a tournament style. By creating a Pokémon UNITE squad a player can communicate with their teammates and coordinate how to approach the battle.

Destructoid recently reported on a producer letter from the Pokémon UNITE website that mentioned the game would be coming to this year's Pokémon World Championships. The letter mentioned that there will be a competition season that will lead up to the event that will allow players to form a team and battle internationally. The teams that qualify during this competitive season will be able to battle head-to-head. The letter does not mention exactly what the competitive season will look like, but it does say that details will be coming soon. The letter also discussed that the new tournament mode they would be implementing will level the playing field more, this is following the most recent patch that added match-making to Pokémon UNITE.

Pokemon World Championships

With the return of the Pokémon World Championships this year, players can expect to see a lot of new elements. In previous years only a few games were allowed during the Championships but many more are available in this series. The Championships are held in Europe and will take place in August. They will also span across four days with different games and different rounds being held on the different days. Players who are interested in the Pokémon UNITE tournament should keep an eye on the website and socials for updates on how to sign up and begin competing.

In anticipation of the Championships, Pokémon fans are likely to see more news about what to expect. Whether it be the trading card game or Pokémon UNITE players across all different platforms will come together and challenge each other to their respective games. With the last few years being canceled, it will be exciting to see what the company brings to the table and how Pokémon UNITE will fit into the competition.
