Pokémon Unite’s Holowear cosmetic system provides great costumes that enhance lackluster Pokémon designs. Each individual player gets to choose a Pokémon to play as at the start of each game. Pokémon Unite currently features Sylveon, Mamoswine, and 24 more Pokémon in its roster, ranging from offensive attackers to supportive teammates. In addition to minute gameplay elements that can change from game to game, such as branching attack trees and held consumable items, Pokémon Unite also has Holowear, or purely cosmetic costumes a Pokémon can wear into battle.

In Pokémon Unite, some Pokémon get more costumes than others. Generally, more popular Pokémon such as Charizard and Pikachu find themselves getting many Holowear outfits. Even for typically well-loved Pokémon designs such as these, the costumes are only a bonus. Some costumes, like Charizard’s swashbuckling Captain Style, or Alolan Ninetales’ gorgeous Sacred Style, enhance these Pokémon’s appearances even further.

What constitutes as a “good” or “bad” Pokémon design always has been, and always will be, highly subjective within the community, and everyone will have their own personal favorites (and least favorites) which, unfortunately, may not always align with their preferred play style. For example, a player who enjoys the supporter role may not necessarily be an inherent fan of Pokémon like Mr. Mime, which has a very different design than most. Still, the wide variety of Holowear costumes in Pokémon Unite means there’s bound to be something that fits everyone’s taste, even if the Pokémon wearing it normally isn’t the player's favorite. On the other hand, when it comes to Pokémon that the player already loves, having some extra Holowear in Pokémon Unite doesn’t hurt.

Holowear Costumes In Pokémon Unite Are Neat But Not Perfect

Some Holowear costumes are cute and worth adding, but some other Pokémon designs in Pokémon Unite, like the generic Purple and Orange Unite Styles given to numerous Pokémon such as Pikachu and the high-tier defender Snorlax, are simply more boring than outright bad. Players who dislike these costumes always have the option of not using them at all if they happen to unlock them. Another option would be to use them infrequently compared to the more stylish costumes, but it would have been nice to see a more interesting option.

When it comes to members of Pokémon Unite’s roster that might not be as universally loved, however, Holowear can really enhance their appeal. It’s hard to deny the adorableness of Wigglytuff’s Bedtime Style, and Mr. Mime’s Magician Style is a lot more charming (and less horryfying) than the clothes-less original. It’s far more likely than not that a player will find a Holowear that suits their visual preferences when the Pokémon that fits their preferred play style doesn’t.
